Does anyone know of a place to get the 3 point front seat belts? I just got off the phone with LMC and the catalog is wrong - they do not carry a replacement front seat belt.

Or - any one ever rebuilt the front seat belt? Mine do not retract very well......

Thanks in advance for your help

I think the LMC ones are "generic", so you could probably retrofit them with not too much effort. Not a direct replacement though. I haven't ever refurbed a seat belt mechanism, and I don't know if it's really even a great idea to mess with it. On the other hand I think the only issue they have is dirt/gunk/debris in the mechanism from time and the elements so in theory they should be able to be cleaned.

If the belt is in good shape, you can probably fix the retractor if it works at all.
If it never works, then you may have a broken spring, but if its just sluggish, then probably just dirt and gunk.

Just don't use any really nasty solvents that might damage the belt.
And don't do a lot of adjusting.
I worked on one that never locked up, got it so that it locked up at the slightly provocation.

You could drive down a bumpy road, and the darn thing would start getting tighter and tighter.
Everytime you hit a bump that gave it some slack, it took it and locked.
Next bump, more slack, sucked it up and locked again.
After a while, it would get hard to breath.
Finally went back in and fixed it.
It wasn't a GM, so I can't give specifics as to cleaning yours, but it should be fairly obvious.

it does not tighten up and you end up with a noose ready to strangle you. not to mention it gets caught in the door on exit....fun fun slam the door on it again. my small base of friends are now all certified on post ride stoage of the belt :_)

I will squirt it with some spray tomorow, but i have already tried a few years ago. I think if i could wind it 1 more time it would work....

I ordered the LMC seatbelt kit for the same reason...functionality. My old drivers side unit was not retracting properly so I ordered 2 so the passenger unit would match.

After installing the drivers side I was not impressed at all with the looks. It looks nothing like the factory unit and there is no way (that I found at least) to just replace the guts of the factory unit with the LMC components. When the install was finished it just looked cheap. The seatbelt works great and safety was my main concern so mission accomplished there but I sent the other seatbelt kit back.

If you are going for a factory restore I would skip the LMC units and scour the junkyards. If you are going for functionality they are great.

Just my .02 but I would happily pay more for new or refurb GM seatbelt replacements rather than the LMC units. I dont want to hijack but if anyone knows where you could get a better alternative to the LMC kit PM me.

I found a site that rebuilds for older cars I'll post later here. Thanks for the review I'll probably get the lmc if the safety was good.

They were easy to install but you have to take ALL the factory stuff out. The only thing i reused was the plastic sleeves that guide the receiver straps to the floor. I even tried to mod the factory plastic housing to cover up the unit that the shoulder belt retacts into. Even that looks bad as there is nothing on the LMC unit to attach it to. It will be an ongoing issue for me to make it look factory again but safety first.

Hopefully I will find a nice used set or one of the aftermarket companies will see enough of a demand for them and produce an OEM style replacement.

Nice find! I just emailed the company to get some info. I also posted in the wanted section for some used seatbelts. If its reasonable to restore it would be nice to have a spare set. I am guessing that by not having a standard pricing structure it will be expensive. Any bets on how much? I am guessing $300 for the set.

Sounds about right. I'm in for $275.

If you get a chance can you take a pic of the install and post it? I am happy to hear the belts work, but you have me sketched about ugliness. If not no big deal.

You might check with someone local that does upholstery work. The guy that did my seats had to sew in a new back belt where the rats had chewed it up. The warehouse that I bought must of my material I used on my interior sales the seatbelt webbing. So if you can find someone that knows how to replace them, they may know how to rebuild them.

I will snap some pictures today so you can appreciate the true comparison to the factory units.

I will check around here as well for someone like that. When you were doing your interior (which is as nice a restore I have seen) did you have them restore both your front seatbelts or were they good enough to reuse as is?

A lot if times the belt and guides just need to be cleaned. in fact for my Honda they have a service bulletin on how to properly clean the belt and guide it is so common. Too many sodas and cheeseburgers make seat belts unhappy :D

Here is the pertinent part of the Honda service bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1. Use either isopropyl alcohol, or prepare a solution of 5 ounces of mild dishwashing
liquid in a gallon of warm water.

NOTICE
Do not use strong cleaning solutions, upholstery cleaners, or commercial
automotive interior cleaners. They can affect the durability of the webbing.

2. Soak a clean cloth in the cleaner. Insert the cloth between the seat belt and metal
loop on the upper anchor. Use a credit card or similar item to help insert the cloth
into the loop. Work the cloth back and forth to clean the dirt out of the inside of the
loop.

3. Pull the seat belt out fully. Soak a clean cloth in the cleaner, and clean both sides of
the seat belt webbing. Dry the webbing thoroughly with a clean cloth. Do not use a
hair dryer or similar device.

4. Test the belt for proper retraction by pulling the latch plate down to the floor of the
vehicle and then releasing it. The belt should retract fully in 4 seconds or less.

I will check around here as well for someone like that. When you were doing your interior (which is as nice a restore I have seen) did you have them restore both your front seatbelts or were they good enough to reuse as is?

They were in good shape, I just clean the belt with soap and water and a small scrub brush. Also put a towel under them so the dirty water would transfer to the towel. Then I blow them out with an air compressorto get they dry and clean.

My interior is torn apart completely and the seatbelts are not even connected right now. Sorry!:haha:When I get it put back together I will snap those pics for you if still needed.
