I picked up this 91' hp 60 axle out of a f350. I have never done a hub removal on a 4WD before :shame:. I have borrowed a 4 and 6 prong removal tool from Autozone but neither are right. I don't know what to do really. It looks so simple but I am assuming how it comes apart and we all know what that leads to...lol Can anyone help here? Thanks in advance. Here are pictures of the hubs internals.....

Turn that there nut to the left. But the right tool helps...

I've used a hammer and punch in the slots before to turn. But that's last resort IMO.

X2. with the right socket it should be no big deal but i'd use a punch on it.

I'm not following...the nut with the single key way? Should I expect to use the 4wd sockets at all then? It seemed the 4 prong was too small on the ID. Thanks for the help

shaft is in spindle = threaded with 1 key way .

spindle has threaded nuts on it = 4 tab special socket and dana 50 ford or dana 60 = big 4 tab NOT small 4 tab for 1/2 and 3/4 ton axles.

one outer nut spin off.

inner middle lock ring = snap ring plyers help get it out easy with the holes used like its a snap ring . easy way to grab that grease monstor . and grab it next to the key way on the spindle for best results.

then inner nut to spin off with the socket . and be carful of the inner nut it has a SMALL pin on it . don't brake it off.

I know, I'm just trying to give him a visual of the spindle, axle shaft, and spindle nuts.

The O'Reilly's here has them. They are also available thru Harbor Freight but it may be internet only.

I'm a catchin on y'all! Thanks guys - I'll give it a whirl tomorrow afternoon and reply back. BTW - I'm tryin to 'recenter' the pumpkin to make it fir a chevy application :) Chevy HP60 sounds bad a!!

Be advised that Ford, or Dana, or somebody, came up with a "better idea" a few years back, and replaced the old three part nut system with a self locking system that requires either a special wrench, or some extra work to get off.

The nut I see in that picture is NOT the ones I am used to, they have a ring around the outside of the nut that has to be depressed to remove it.

BUT something looks a little suspicious. Before you go to a lot of trouble, take a small screwdriver or a punch, and put it in one of the four slots of the nut, and press in kinda hard.
You should be pressing against solid steel, and nothing should happen. But if it gives and is spring loaded, you will need a wrench designed for a ratcheting nut.

If so, make sure you get one for the Ford front axle, and not the newer rear axle. It takes a different socket.

The one I am familiar with, has a spring loaded collar with a tab that engages the spindle groove.
As you tighten the nut, it locks, and will not back up until you depress the collar with the wrench.
Like I say, yours is not that type, but I am suspicious of those flat tabs I see behind the nut.
If you don't find any spring tension, never mind, just go ahead and take it off like a regular nut.

Here is a picture of the type I know about.

never seen the ratchet nut in a front application fordum .

and trying to recenter the high pinion ford to gm ? ? ? good luck it can be done but cheeper and faster to built one and better castings aftermarket .

I hope you're planning on having a shop retube that... I'm not trying to be a dick but if getting the wheel hub off was difficult then a job that requires a true bar, 100s of tons of pulling/pushing force and a lathe might not be in your scope b

Everyone's gotta learn st some point. I have help on that end thankfully. I just don't want to screw up the internals having no prior experience with it. Not looking to fix my f ups ya know. Slow down and ask questions when needed and maybe it'll all work out is my thought.

My truck has it, which is the reason I am familiar with it. 89 3/4 ton, Dana 44. Not sure how long or when they started.
I had one of them come apart and fail not long after I got the truck. Noticed the wheel getting loose, went to tighten the nut, and there was no lock nut.

Took it out, and the lock collar had come off. I bought a new one, and both fronts have been fine ever since.
Still not sure what happened.
A lot of the Dana 80s on the rear use a version of it, but I understand it takes a different tool, and not sure what it looks like.
