Does anyone know if I can swap a 97 auto trans out of a chevy truck into a 98 or can I swap motor + trans into 98 and pass cali emissions? I have 98 with blown tranny and can get 97 motor and trans complete. Any educated input helps.

As far as i know, they are identical....so no idea how the smog ppl would know the difference. Keep the original computer.

Wait for other responses to this thread, as i don't have first hand experience.

But, if as i remember, both 97 and 98 motors/trans are the same thing, keep the computer with the truck, and swap the motor/trans. That way, when they hook up the scan tool, it will look like the original 98 motor, and a goofy build date number or something in the computer won't mess you up.

If they check serial numbers your toast. Just find one from the same year or newer. You could probably get away with it but why take the chance? Plenty of motors that will check out 100%.

How many miles are on the current motor?

Cali law is the new motor must be the same year or newer.

It's about a 75/25 shot that you'll get away with it but like I said, theres plenty of deals on your year or newer motor/trans combos that the refs can't complain about.

I'd just hold out for the right deal.
