What's your preferred way to check/adjust the column shift linkage for a TH-350 trans?

Ron Session's HP book on TH-350 says to:

1) loosen the clamp of the steering column rod and transmission lever cross shaft.

2) Make sure both the transmission lever and column shift lever are both definitely in the park positions.

3) Then tighten the clamp to both rods to 20ft/lbs.

i'm not doubting this procedure but it seems too simple?

I like to use neutral.
The shifter has a stop, I push the shifter up to hit the stop, then put the trans in neutral and tighten the rod.
Works perfect every time.
