I was going to post this in another thread but it kind of needs its own. I have had problems with moisture in the air from my 5hp 60 gallon compressor.
I ordered a fan from ebay and I will pick up a B&M 11"x11"x1.5" oil cooler with 1/2" npt threads. These items will be for an after cooler. I checked the temp of the line coming out of the head of the compressor. After less than 10 minutes of running it was at 320 degrees and the end going in the tank was 225 degrees. It was probably not more than 80 degrees outside and the parts of the compressor were 90-100 degrees from being in the sun.
People who have built an after cooler with a smaller B&M cooler, have reported a 200 degree drop in temperature, so that the line coming out of the cooler is less than 100 degrees. That line goes into a water separator and then a line goes in the tank. This traps most of the water before it gets in the compressor tank. I put about 25' of hose into a 5 gallon bucket of water, right where it comes out of my compressor tank. It seems like I get more water out of the air now.
I also picked up a Motorguard M30 filter. It is a paper type that will filter down to 0.01 microns. They work great for plasma cutters, painting, and sand blast cabinets. The filter was $70 with free shipping and it came with 3 cartridges. Here is the link to the kit: http://www.tooltopia.com/motorguard-m45.aspx The new cartridges are $9 each (or $8 each when you buy 3) from a different web site. Tooltopia wants 20 bucks each. TPtools has the filters: http://www.tptools.com/Coalescing-Element,102.html?b=s*motorguard+filter This filter will go in the top of the garage, after the 5 micron husky water separator, then the lines will T off from there. The M30 filters can supposedly be dried out and reused as well. Hopefully my after cooler and two 5 micron filters will get most of the water and oil and the motorguard will get the last little bit and last for a while.
I also ordered a new gun and pickup tube from TP tools to go in my blast cabinet. They had good reviews and prices and the parts are USA made. They had a kit to upgrade the harbor freight type cabinets like I have. I couldn't find any new tips or parts for my HF blast gun, and they don't sell just the gun.
Here is a link to a page with a few home made aftercoolers, if anyone is interested: http://blog.cnccookbook.com/2011/09/06/aftercooling-a-compressor-to-cut-down-on-moisture/
You can also search for air compressor aftercoolers. The B&M cooler is supposed to be rated to 200 psi according to B&M. Some people use air conditioning condensers or evaporators. The fan I picked up is a 10" 5 blade 40 degrees and 1600 rpm. It came out of a salad bar cooler. I will have to build a housing for it. Cost was $40 shipped and it looks like it is in great condition.
