A rectangular goat pen is enclosed by a barn on one side and by 100 feet of fence on the three other sides. The area of the pen is 912 sq. ft.

a) draw a diagram of the goat pen and then find it's dimentions.

b) Is ther more than one answer? Does this change the area?

And hurry up with answers you wankers.... /forums/images/graemlins/1zhelp.gif

NOt that this helps any but this shape couldn't be a true rectange. Its a trapazoid. If I wasn't on the wifes laptop Id draw it in AutoCAD and give you an answer. All I can say is its shaped like \-/ and I think the area of a trap is (b*h)+(b*h)/2 of the leftover triangles but I could be wrong /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I thought paralelagram, but it says rectangle and My wife found an answer, but she was able to create more sq. footage with the same amount of fence....And when I brought that up ,I stumped the sh!t outta her.... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Two sizes:

1) 2 sides = 38ft, the remaining side = 24ft

2) 2 sides = 12ft, the remaining side = 76ft

Both give fence lengths of 100 and square feet of 912.

Here's how (since your kid will probably need to put that in his/her notebook /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif)

Set up these two equations using what you know:
1) 2L + W = 100
2) L x W = 912

From the first equation you can write W = 100 - 2L
Plug in that W into equation #2 and you get L(100 - 2L) = 912
Multiply that out and use the quadratic formula.
That will give you 2 values for L (12 and 38).
Then you can find W by plugging in your values of L into equation #1.

You're welcome. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Oh, and for sh!ts and giggles, the maximum area that can be enclosed by that fence is 1250 sq. ft.

That's 2 sides 25 feet long and the other side 50 feet. That'll give the lil' guys more area to run around. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
