ANOTHER locked vs. open axle question.

[ QUOTE ]
Yes you will be able to turn just fine. I don't really understand why everyone whines about the steering effort that a locker adds.....it's very minimal.

I'm not worried so much about effort, I'm more concerned about turning radius. I do enough 3 and 4 point turns as it is since I wheel with Jeeps /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif and they turn like mice in a corn field compared to my full size /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif Actually, they kind of look like mice in comparison to a full size on 40's /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif

Then do what I do. Reach down and shift into 2wd.

If the surface is so bad that you need 4wd or you can't turn around, it will do it in 4wd. Big deal, you might have to back up twice instead of once.

Seriously, try it. I don't know what everyone whines about....front locker was one of the best mods I've made to date. Once you're locked front and rear you feel like you can rule the world. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

Once I ditch this Edelbrock carb that makes the engine die all the time, I'll be SURE that I can rule the world.

you said tight trails
and lots of mud
well if you go for lots of mud and mostly mud than you could just weld both it's cheap and you usally don't have to turn around in mud. But it won't work good for tight trails if you have the money for the detroit than put that in the back and run the front open. for now than get a selectable locker for the front then you get the best of all the worlds that what i'm doing when the coin comes /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I'm with you guys and I'd hate to not be locked front and rear. I think I'll put a detroit up front and weld the rear, then save money for a detroit in the rear if I don't like the welded spiders. The main reason for this is that I'd really hate to set up the front gears twice.

Now I just have to figure out if my welder will handle the job or if I should send it out to be welded. I have a Lincoln "Weld Pak 3200HD" with .035 and .030 flux core wire. It's a 110v and is rated for 3/8" steel with flux core wire. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif
