It's time I got off my butt and got going on my build. I figured I'd start a thread to keep track of my progress and to keep any questions I have in one place.

I'm starting with an 87 K5. I bought it in 2005 for $1500. Truck originaly belonged to friends of mine, I had been trying to buy it for several years. Told them if they ever sold it I wanted first chance. That day finaly came. They parked it because the transmission went (Th350....700R4 was swaped long ago). For some reason they had the bright idea to start the motor with no trans attached. Long story short, the motor ended up with a rod knock, that's where I come in.

Towed it home and messed with the motor a little to be certain it was a rod before I pulled it. Well it was so I took the motor out of my 77 K20 and stuck that, along with a rebuilt Th350/208. Drove it that way for 6 months or so. Then on a trip I sucked some water into the transmission...started slipping on the way home. Bought a 465/205 to swap in it's place. All was good for another couple of months. Then one hard 1-2 shift poped the spiders in the rear 10bolt. Not a problem, lock in the hubs and take it easy to get home, I was literaly 1 mile away. That mile consisted of three corners. On that first turn I broke an axle joint in the front 10bolt.

I ended up buying a parts Blazer with a D44/12B, 4.88's, 38's and approx 10" of lift (or so I was told). Swapped the axles and front lift spring into mine and scrapped the rest (it was a Michigan truck, if you've never seen one scroll down and look at mine). Did a shackle flip in the rear with a block. On the first trip out with the new tires, they stuffed themselves into my fenders. I had planned on trimming, just never got around to it before going wheeling. Somewhere along the line I broke the spider gears in the 12B. Put a mini spool in it while I rouned up parts for a gear swap in my 3/4 axles. The 38's were pushing it on the half ton stuff, I only put the mini in because I had one laying around from another project that got traded. In case anyone is wondering, a 12B car mini spool can be made to work in a truck axle. Just had to do some grinding on the blocks.

Took longer than I thought to get my gear swap done. I daily drove the truck for close to 8 months with the spool. Blew a tire one day, that motivated me to swap my axles. Also did a disc conversion on the 14B at this time.

Motor went in the winter of 2008. Severly overheated it...cracked both heads and I'm sure the block too. Rebuilt the motor that came with the truck when I bought it. After some unexpected machine work (had a low spot in one of the decks they had to raise), I was on my way again. Truck has pretty much stayed the same since then. Daily driver when I wasn't able to ride my motorcycle.

Now that I've got the back story onto some pictures. I don't have any of when I first got it (I did, but a recent computer crash took them).

One of the holes that may have let water into the Th350. Was running a set of 33x12.5's on stock springs with a zero rate at each corner.

As it sits today.

This is what happens when the bed sides start seperating from the floor. Wouldn't have been as bad had there not been a body lift. The rear of the truck dropped down a good 4-5"

One of the reasons body lifts are bad.

What's left of the drivers rocker.

The plans:

I plan on swapping a truck cab and building either a set of skins for the back or a flat bed. Rear suspenssion will get a set of 64's. Front will get the old rear springs (52's) when I can afford crossover. Have a new trans/tansfercase to go inplace of the old ones. Mainly because mine leak...alot. Any my 205 has a slip yoke, replacement has a bolt on.

Motor is still undecided. Might stay the same (355), or I might build a 400 or 454 as I have a few of them taking up space.

I picked this cab up cheap. I had a thread going in the Body Shop about the metal replacement....kind of stopped updating it. I'm almost done with the metal work. I put it outside when the weather got nice and pretty much haven't touched it since. Now it's starting to rust on the welds/bare spots. :doah:I'll deal with it when I go to paint it.

Drivers side mostly done. There are more pictures in this thread.

Questions and comments are always welcome.

Damn! That was some serious rust. Not use to seeing anything that severe around here. Good luck and keep us updated.

wow michigan must mix acid with their salt, that is pretty bad.

Believe it or not, mine isn't that bad for having been on the road for 23 years in Michigan. The outside metal is still halfway decent, along with the front clip. It's where the pannels meet eachother that the rust started on mine. I'll have some more pictures up tomarow when I finish pulling the interior.

Got the rest of the seats and carpet out today. The floor from the B pillar forward wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Maily the drivers rocker and the area where the floor kicks up behind the seats.

The white spots in the corners is daylight comming through.

Tomarow I plan to start cutting the back off and maybe pull the front end. I still need to be able to move this thing so I don't want to pull the dash appart yet. I only need to move it to the other side of the driveway, but the girlfriends car is there currently. Trying to sell that, should be gone in a day or so (I could move them now, but her car needs a clutch and I don't feel like pushing).

Pulled the front end and top off yesterday...then I got called back into work. I didn't get much more than that done yesterday. Today I pulled most of the dash appart. Still need to remove the wiring harness. Undecided at this point if I'm going to reuse the stock stuff, so I'm being carefull when pulling it. Hope to swing by my friends house and grab his plasma cutter to get the tub into pieces I can handle. There calling for rain tomarow so I might not be able to get out to work on it over the weekend.

Body is off!

The first major step of the build is done. The rain decided to hold off so I grabed the plasma and went to work. Cut everything into sections that I could easily move around by myself....except for the firewall/floor. The tip was starting to get bad on the gun, so I just rolled that off and will get to it later. I was surprised that the "cab" section was as light as it was. A pickup cab weighs alot more.

I could have rolled it off at this point, but didn't. Gutted the dash and removed the roof.

Going to try to clean the yard up alittle tomarow and maybe mow the lawn. The people driving by are giving me weird looks. Don't know if it's because of the truck, or that the neighbors have mowed twice already and I haven't even done it once. Might start striping the frame tomarow too.
