A kid here in town saw my '80 K20 Sub parked out for scrapping and inquired about the A/C stuff on it. Everything was there, complete. I told him if he took the rig to his dads shop (they own a body shop) and pulled the motor, tranny and case for me, he could have all the HV/AC stuff he wanted. So he agreed.
He came and got the Sub this past Saturday and also brought it back the same day, too. He also delivered the motor, tranny and case and dropped it on my shop floor with their wrecker. Done deal. Or so I thought.
I noticed the chrome shifter was missing. I texted him about it. He never replied.
Yesterday I went to the shop to get it. When I walked in, his eyes got real big and he froze dead in his tracks. I told him I had a buyer for the shifter and needed to get it mailed out (there never was a buyer, I just wanted it now). He said it was in back, would look for it and get it to me. He was acting strange the whole time. I knew something was suspicious. So I left.
Last night I texted the other guy that works in their shop. We were best men in each others weddings, so I asked what the deal was. He said the kid bent the shifter.
Today my buddy texted back to me stating that he ripped the kid a new one for not being honest and avoiding me. So I texted the kid and told him that accidents happen but I did tell him to remove the shifter first before pulling everything. I told him I wasn't mad but I did want compensated for the loss. He agreed to everything and I will get the bent shifter back.
My big question is, has anyone ever bent these thick shifters? I've thought as thick as they were, they wouldn't bend too easily. This piece I had was a chrome one and in damn near perfect condition with no flakes or rust anywhere on it.
Next time I will remove a shifter myself before letting someone else pull the rest.
Pics to follow as soon as I get it back from the kid. Oh yeah, my buddy said the kid was gonna have another retired body shop worker use nickel rod on it to fix it. I told him not to touch it and leave it alone.
