A kid here in town saw my '80 K20 Sub parked out for scrapping and inquired about the A/C stuff on it. Everything was there, complete. I told him if he took the rig to his dads shop (they own a body shop) and pulled the motor, tranny and case for me, he could have all the HV/AC stuff he wanted. So he agreed.
He came and got the Sub this past Saturday and also brought it back the same day, too. He also delivered the motor, tranny and case and dropped it on my shop floor with their wrecker. Done deal. Or so I thought.

I noticed the chrome shifter was missing. I texted him about it. He never replied.

Yesterday I went to the shop to get it. When I walked in, his eyes got real big and he froze dead in his tracks. I told him I had a buyer for the shifter and needed to get it mailed out (there never was a buyer, I just wanted it now). He said it was in back, would look for it and get it to me. He was acting strange the whole time. I knew something was suspicious. So I left.

Last night I texted the other guy that works in their shop. We were best men in each others weddings, so I asked what the deal was. He said the kid bent the shifter.

Today my buddy texted back to me stating that he ripped the kid a new one for not being honest and avoiding me. So I texted the kid and told him that accidents happen but I did tell him to remove the shifter first before pulling everything. I told him I wasn't mad but I did want compensated for the loss. He agreed to everything and I will get the bent shifter back.

My big question is, has anyone ever bent these thick shifters? I've thought as thick as they were, they wouldn't bend too easily. This piece I had was a chrome one and in damn near perfect condition with no flakes or rust anywhere on it.

Next time I will remove a shifter myself before letting someone else pull the rest.

Pics to follow as soon as I get it back from the kid. Oh yeah, my buddy said the kid was gonna have another retired body shop worker use nickel rod on it to fix it. I told him not to touch it and leave it alone.

Ok, the kid just dropped the shifter off and paid me for the loss. Turns out it wasn't the actual shaft that got bent but rather the flat curved part where the shaft is welded to and the pivot bolt goes in. Basically its the pivotal part that got bent and cracked. The sleeve that was welded inside the pivot for which the bolt goes thru also popped out.

Now I'm thinking of having Kert bend it back into shape and rewelding everything.

Oh yeah, this shifter has the funny looking bend in it which I already knew was for the 400/205's but were they only for certain years of trucks in order to fit/clear the hole in the floor?

Pic to follow...

not what i expected but i had to bend a shifter of mine because in 4lo it hit the floorboard. took a lot of heat.

i have a broke 205 shifter from a 400/205.

got the whole combo from scrap yard. it was broken when i got it.

tore the hell out of the piviot area . never broke the bolt/ casting/ or tcase linkage.

i even had the 205 all apart for the reman for my 203/205 doubler kit.

Here are a few pics of the cracks (sorry for the crappy pics):

Pics didn't turn out good. Cracks are hard to see. The bent flat pivot part is twisted as shown above. Sleeve is popped out. Gonna see if Kert can fix this or not. Hate to toss a good shifter out just for a few cracks.

I have one of those shifters in my gargage. I was going to swap it into my 76, but decided against the chrome. If you need it make me an offer, I don't know what they go for?

I will be in Wichita on Feb. 5th for the swap meet. Taking some cars and scrap down to to cash in.

Ive never seen a chrome 205 shifter before.

Then again Ive only seen a handful of trucks with 205's around here. 95% of what Ive been around has had a 203 or 208. Maybe the trucks with 205's get worked to death or rust away before the others for some reason? The 72 and earlier K trucks are also non-existant around here

i've got a chrome one kicking around the garage somewhere...
