off the top of my head,
the M1009 was your best bet for a DD part time trail rig, running a 6.2/TH400/NP208 drivetrain, with 10 bolt axles front and rear, running 3.08 gears, and i believe a gov locker in the rear. This is the setup i currently have, and have no real complaints. I love the 20mpg i get on the highway without breaking a sweat, and for 90% of the off roading ive wanted to do, the truck has eaten it up with 33x12.50 goodyear MT/R's with only a few times being necessary to drop into 4 wheel low. most of the stuff i couldnt handle was due to rocks i didnt have the ground clearance for, and the lack of balls on my part because i tend to go wheeling alone and its not worth getting stuck because i dont have a buddy to pull me out. only reason im upgrading is kinda preventative maintanence, because i want to do more serious wheeling in the future, and dont think the 10 bolts will handle it. I also have grown tired of the TH400, the shift points suck, and the 3 speed limits axle gearing if you use the truck on the highway. so at some point a 4L80E is going in the th400's place.
But as they come from the military, the m1009 is an awesome all around rig if you dont do any really crazy wheeling.
the M1008 was basically the more hardcore M1009, with beefier axles, a D44 front and 14 bolt rear i believe, running 4.XX gears. either 4.11 or 4.56 i think.
the trucks got the 1 ton gear, with big nasty axles and deep gears.
