Does anyone have one, and if so, what do you think?
I do! And I like it. I have it in a 1989 2500 Pickup. It has lots of power and is mild mannered enough to be street driven all the time.
Worth the money? Is the as advertised "lumpy idle" really that lumpy? How much power gain and mileage increase did you notice? I'm debating this engine or the 383, but the 383 is so much more money, trying to see if it is worth it
I'm in the exact same boat as you. trying to justify the extra cash for the 383 when the 350 probably will do. I did read an article someone posted (I don't have it in front of me) that HotRod took the 383 replaced the rockers with 1.6, air gap intake, 750 carb and had 380hp and 474tq (450tq at 2,500rpm) they went further with a different cam, head gasket, and trimmed valve guide height resulting in 463hp 503tq (435tq at 2,500rpm) /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif So I guess the 383 has more potential and is built to handle it better, If you'd still want more power down the line. I still haven't decided but need to in a month or two, wonder if we could get a group purchase?
That'd be great if we could, I just have trouble justifying the extra 1500 for 35 ft lbs torque when you have to buy a custom chip to make it work right. Its a mean engine though. What is the cheapest you have found for it?
If I do get the 383, I want to put in the edelbrock MPFI system
I dont know how they define lumpy idle, but I dont think it is. Its a mild engine with lots of power. Its really quite powerful, but torque is king. You will never wish you had less power, only more. I wish I had gone with the HT 383, but GM couldnt get their act together on it in the time I needed it.
I have no regrets about the 330 vortec, but more torque with a flatter curve is always better.
cheapest near me (1hr drive, Apple chevrolet, York Pa) I believe was 3,699.00
That's about what I am seeing around here for prices and at pace. Any reason why the engine is so much more? Is it better parts, or research that bumped the price? $1500 more is quite a bit
I have a complete ZZ 350 for sale less than 20K miles-runs perfect-350hp/405 tq
thats what i put in about 2 years ago.
loved it at first, but i've had a few issues with mine...the rear main seal and the intake gasket have both died within the first 1500 miles.
the idle is a little lumpy, it sound better than a stock 350, with some headers and duals it sounds real nice.
you can even get them from jeg's now, i tried to order it thru a dealership, they wanted like 4200 bucks...ended up getting it off of the internet for 2999, and another 285 to have it put in my garage floor...the truck with a liftgate was great, but it doubled the shipping price....
