auto darkening welding helmet question???

its a brand new helmet...i just started using it like 5 mins before it messed up...it stays light...i was welding set it down, changed rods and when i went back i was like wow this rod is brighter then i relized it wasnt working proerlly...

maybe the batteries? if it was sitting on a shelf for a while they could be dead. make sure the wires are hooked up inside.

Go set it in the sun for an hour or two. If the batteries get to low they won't work. If that doesn't work then :dunno: .

is it solar or battery or both? batteries are cheap, and even cheaper from a factory...

i dunno i know nothing about it but im sure im about to find out real soon i guess...

Dude, it's easy to see if it's battery or solar. Does it have a solar panel for charging it, or not...

My hobart is battery with a solar charger. Welding lets the solar panel charge the battery, but if the battery sits for to long it can discharge & not darken the helmet. If that happens you put it out in the sun for awhile so the sun will charge the battery & make the helmet darken again.

My helmet must be weird...
with it turned off, its dark
when its turned on, its light
When you strike your arc it darkens
battery dies or it times out, it goes dark
Battery only, no solar.

is it turned on? Some you have to push on the lens and it will flicker to turn them on, maybe it wasn't on.

The button for mine is a real pain, its inside the helmet. I have to pull my glove off and reach in from the top of the mask to hit the button. Its dark all the time (off) its about a 13shade, when you hit the on button the mask becomes see through about like the glasses I use with the cutting torch (maybe a 3-4, real dark sunglasses). It has a sensor in the front and when you strike an arc the mask turns black (to whatever shade you set it too, I use about a 9 or 10). I'll try to snap some pics today, I'll post when I get back to my place Sunday.

the way I understand it, it is like a LCD display.
In the off mode its closed _v_v_v_ (its dark as if it where a std welding shade)
In the on mode its open |V|V|V| (its open, allows in more light, once the arc is striked it reverts to the "closed" position for welding)

taht is correct, it is an lcd screen ,sometimes you can see the dots too. It should be real light when it's on and darken once an arc is struck. If it's not doing that it might be broken. Also, is there a grind mode on the helmet? If it's stuck in grind mode then it wont darken much once an arc is struck.

no gride mode, it works for what I use it for
when I run the torch/grinder I have a pair of the blue-blocker-lookin green goggles

i don't kowi would call the manufacuterer and try to get a new one or see if they know what it is.
