Automatic Hubs vs. Manual Hubs

Just to make sure I am clear on all of this.:o

I have a 203.

I would need the part time kit installed in the 203 before I could go to manual hubs. Am I correct?

You can put manuals in but you would need to leave them locked for the 203 to work without being in 4hi-loc. Might as well keep the slugs in there if you do not have a part time kit.

slight hijack... i've been considering manual hubs, for a while, even though my autos have never failed me. but, i don't love the idea of having to hop out in the mud, etc., especially in the cold. does somebody make a better auto than stock? that's something i haven't seen mentioned.

If your running an open rear...you could just toss in a locker. Bang, there you go! Cept still no turning help.
Just lock them as soon as you leave pavement, or if its a short trip on-road before the trail and you dont have a front diff locker, just lock em when you get in and leave the shifter in 2

Absolutely correct. P/T kit is also no big deal. Also ,very easy to do on the 203.

its no contest MANUAL hubs are tougher and easier to change out if you blow em up. Going from auto to manual is an easy swap and I did both in under an hour WHILE teaching my wife how to do it in the process

No, there is not another auto alternative.

If you do decide to go with manuals, keep a lawn chair in the truck and an ice chest full of ice and fresh drinks at all times. Because.... if you need 4wd you will likely need to sit down for a few minutes after locking in the 1st side, and have something cold to drink before starting in on getting the second side's hub turned......it's hard sweaty work, but someone has to do it....

Just do what I do..."Honey, get out and lock the hubs in, thanks hun..":eek1: :haha:

hmmmm My dads ford super duy has the front hubs that auto lock but give you the option to get out and manually lock them. Dont know if there vacuum or electrical, but if someone technically savy took a super duty front axel, stuffed it under there chevy and make the auto\manual hubs work, that would answer all your questions

Alright I got the manuals installed and you were right, no big deal, didnt help with the noise problem though, doesnt matter as the hubs needed changing anyway as most of you agreed. I am going to lower the transfer case next I guess shouldnt be much to it looking at the parts, any suggestions?

Or you could go with flanges! They look cooler anyways haha.:wink1:

Drive Flanges permantently lock you hubs to the axles.

I have a 203 in my truck with manual hubs, which I bought that way. How can I be sure that the previous owner of the truck put the PT kit in?

Unlock the hubs and try to drive the truck in 4hi. If the truck moves it has a parttime kit. If it does not you do not have a parttime kit and your front driveshaft should be turning.

I may be misunderstanding the obvious: 4Hi locks the tc. This will cause the rear axle to be locked with the front. Don't you mean 2Hi or unlock whatever the 203 says?

There is 4hi-loc 4hi N 4lo 4lo-loc There is no 2 anything on a 203

As long as the shifter is not in one of the loc positions what I typed is correct.
