ok, how do I check the back lash. I have the carrier back in the 14ff rear end, I put the pinion back in to adjust the backlash, but how do I check with the dial thing and the magnetic base? Where do I put it, what does it measure and how do I read it?

help...

Set it up so the indicator is in-line to the ring gear (or as close as you can get it) rideing on the outer edge of the teeth, paralle to the ring rear's direction of rotation.
Hold the pinion in position, and rock the ring gear.

Specs call for .003" - .010" (.005-.007 is best)

While we're here,

Pinion AND Case bearing preload, new bearings = 30 - 55 in/lbs
Pinion AND Case bearing preload, used bearings = 25 - 45 in/lbs
Pinion only, new bearings = 15 - 30 in/lbs
Pinion only, used bearings = 10 - 20 in/lbs

I looked all that up, for another post - putting it to good use.

here is how I set mine
