Man eludes officers by jumping in river

Authorities have found a LaPlatte man to be quite elusive, especially around water.

Gary Stokes eluded capture Monday for the second time in just over a week, stopping the car he was driving and jumping into the Missouri River before swimming away from Sarpy County sheriff's deputies.

Stokes, wanted on misdemeanor warrants, was seen driving a girlfriend's car, and police chased him east on LaPlatte Road toward the river. When he got into the water, Sheriff Jeff Davis said, Stokes apparently swam to the other side.

"He was doing the backstroke, shouting obscenities at the deputies, so he's obviously a good swimmer," said Davis, reflecting on Stokes' similar escape last week in Hanson Lake, just west of the river. "Hopefully he made it, and we'll meet up again in a short period of time."

The Omaha Police Department helicopter and the Sarpy County rescue boat were used in an attempt to find Stokes. The pursuit started shortly after 7 p.m. and the search ended about 9:30 p.m., Davis said.

Besides anticipated eluding charges in Sarpy County, Davis said Stokes is wanted on misdemeanor warrants in Omaha.
