The problem I am having is that while driving there will be a random clunking  noise coming from beneath around the middle area:o . I can't really pinpoint to just accelerating or decelerating because it does it during both while driving straight.

I put it up on Jack Stands to try to simulate it and nothing:thinking: , but soon as I put it back down and drive the clunking comes back.

I'm thinking it could possibly be the u-joint but am not sure:dunno:

Also should the yoke on the transmission (the silver shaft that comes out the back of the tranny to connect to the u-joint and driveshaft) have any play in it because it does:ears: it doesn't leak any fluid out of it so I don't know???

Does anyone know what this could be:ears:

Oh yeah and its a 350 connected to a turbo 350 Trans.:cool1:

Thanks:bow:

That little bit of play cold be in the tranny itself (if its in park) thats normal. It hard to tell with out actually beign there. If there is any slop in the driveshaft itself i would think u joint.

Also check u bolts and such to make sure they are tight.

i'd say if you can move the driveshaft up and down at all it's the ujoint. you should be able to tell which one. try turning it back and forth to see how the play is that way. possible in the tranny but i've had many and they usually just go out before making weird noises but i've seen wilder stuff happen

Its hard to tell because of how the shaft coming out of the tranny has play in it but I don't really notice any slop in the driveshaft or u-joint.

Would that play be normal in neutral too???

Sounds like you have a slip yoke. If so, that yoke rides on a bushing in the tailshaft of the transmission or t-case. I had to replace the one in my 95 Impala, and the bushing only cost me $20 including the labor to press it into my tailshaft. Mine had lots of play and the seal was leaking, but even with the new one installed I could still wiggle it a bit.

get someone you trust to hold the brakes while they shift from rev to drive a few times while you inspect the front and rear u joint just make sure u dont get ran over.

Well here's what I got, while running if I shift from park to reverse I get a clunk, reverse to drive I get a clunk, drive to reverse no clunk.

And if I hold the brakes while in gear (reverse or drive) and give it gas I get like a clunk thud???

Well I pulled the driveshaft today and popped out the front u-joint, it looks good but I'll replace it anyways

I was also reading that slip yokes can cause a clunking if they are not lubed, when I pulled it out it was pretty dry.

Could the slip yoke be my clunking???

Is the yoke allowed to have any play in it while rotating until it catches the transmission because it has a very small amount play until it catches.

Also looking inside of it there is one whole spline gone, but it looks perfectly gone like it was meant that way
