How do I check the ball joints for wear on my 89 Jimmy? Will a stock steering arm work with a 4" lift?

You have to lift the truck and relieve the tension from all ball joits and then use a prybar and try and pry the ball joints up if there is movement, then the ball joints are bad.
That is for the axle ball joints.
As for steering you just try and give them a shake if they have slop then they are worn. I wouldn't drive it with a 4" lift and no raised steering arm, but you can do it. You will have to keep changing ball joints though because the angle on them is extreme.
