I know a guy that needs a new or reman NV4500 for his stock Cummins/Dodge. This will be his third trans. That last one only made it about two years/15k miles. Where is the best place cost/quality wise to get one? He has one quote for $1800 to rebuild his current one (cluster shaft and most gears are toast).

They are actualy not too bad priced from GM. Last I checked last fall they were around $1900. There's places that sell no-core exchange rebuilt ones for $1600 or so.
I just know from various serches though, I rebuilt mine myself, sorry, I know, probably not much help to you. One trouble with items like this is even if you find a place, your liable to pay $200+ for shipping if it's not near you.

Tell him to take it to a different shop, there is no cluster shaft in an NV4500. If he tore all the gears up, he needs to try putting the right fluid in the transmission next time. It takes a special 75w80 synthetic lube that you can get from GM, Mopar, or Castrol, 80w90 is not good for them...

The transmissions are not that tough to overhaul yourself. I rebuilt mine replacing all but two gearsets, the mainshaft and input shaft, along with all the bearings / bushings / small parts for around $1500. If he is getting all that kind of stuff done, $1800 may not be that bad of a price.

That said, you can buy them off ebay for around $1200+shipping

The rebuild isn't terribly hard, if not time consuming. YOu do need a couple special tools, or rigged tools. I made elongated arms for my puller to reach all the way down the shaft to pull certain gears off. And mine came from a diesel so it had a mini balancer on the back end, and you have to have the special socket to reach in there and pull that 5th gear nut off with that mini balancer back there.
I thought the early NV4500's had an assembled countershaft, and the later ones, like mine, are one piece counter shafts with the gears machined into them. At least I think this is what he's talking about, alot of people call the countershaft a 'cluster' shaft. I dunno for sure though.
