Apparently didn't like being locked up in the garage all winter.
Mom and dad got home from Florida yesterday and this morning he opened up the garage and got Big Ugly out.

The good news is it fired right up after he reconnected the batteries. (Man, do I miss my truck.:()

Bad news is he says it put some diesel on the ground under the fuel tank and there's some on the skid plate but not on the body.
I was thinking that since my buddy had filled it right before he brought it over in November that the fuel had expanded due to the recent 70+ degree heat and leaked out. However whenever that happened to me it leaked down the body, not from the tank.

Any thoughts? I'm wondering if the hose, a seal, or something on the filler neck started leaking? It is 25 years old now.
It's in Michigan and I'm in KY, dad won't put much effort into it, and my buddy's good but I don't want to leave it entirely on him to fix.

the easy fix is drive it around for a week. then see what happens. no leak.....no problem. don't fill it full again.

It should be in my buddy's hands soon. Already told him to do so. I hope it's as easy as that.

It looks/sounds like you keep it inside during the winters, but I had an '86 that developed a fuel leak from gravel and salt rubbing around between the skidplate and tank (Wisconsin truck). It was easy to troubleshoot - I just laid under the truck and waited and sure enough there would be a drip every 30 seconds or so. It took a while, but I eventually found the pinhole. It helped to douse the area with brakleen and shoot it with air to dry it out, then just look for the wet spot.

I drove it one winter due to my DD being broken down but haven't since then. I know it was used in the winter by the NG but beyond that I don't know much. It's fairly rust free except the rockers and cab corners. Typical National Guard "never clean what you can't see" maintenance more than likely.

I'm really hoping it's not the tank.

Well, dad says it's not leaking now. It's still on full as well so in my eyes that eliminates a leak out of the bottom of the tank.

He drove it today and nothing seems amiss and the gauge hardly moved.

My buddy has had it for a few weeks now and reports it is actually leaking. Thinking the filler hose or something else on top.

That is typical, and easy to fix.
Just replace the rubber pieces with new, not expensive nor difficult to do.

Hope not. He's there with it and I'm here. Feel kinda bad getting him to do the work for me.

The diesels had a small "siphon" hose leading to a water drain valve, near the front of the rear spring hanger,so water can be drained from the tank..perhaps that hose or shut off valve is weeping??..

diesel, is that siphon hose and it's setup near the bottom? I'd think so but I'm good at ASSuming.

Talked to my buddy the other day and he says it's still leaking despite he and his wife having it down to about 1/8 tank. Reliable drip without being enough to noticeably drain the tank.

I'll give him a call in the morning and suggest he check that. Probably behind the skid plate?

Okay, here's what my buddy said he found:

I found out why the truck is leaking. The tank straps protective rubber strap is all wadded up at the botom of the tank, and the metal strap is rubbing metal on metal at the middle and top of the tank.
Also, there is three rubber fuel lines that were dry rotted, those were only 6" long, and they were replaced.
To fix it the the bed needs to come off, and the tank needs replaced along with the tank straps and new rubbers, the sending unit is rusty so now would be a good time for that too if you want.
I havent tried to find any parts yet, I worked on it this afternoon.

So, looks like I'm in for it a bit. Tank prices aren't as bad as I thought but still, ouch. Several hundred bucks unless I find some good rust free stuff.

I started a new thread about it in the Garage.

I figure several hundred bucks after I do the tank, sender, straps, isolators, my buddy's time/effort, etc.
