when a friend's 87 FI k5 starts up, it spits black carbon out on to the pavement...... is this just 200,000 miles on the smallblock, and oil burning, or does it sound like a fuel injection soot-rich-kinda problem??? input is appreciated.....

Ah, one of the many quirks of the K5. Just as the clunk noise when you drop into gear it also spews out crap at start up. Its just condensation that gets mixed with the soot inside of the pipes. We had a post about this a while back, take a look using the search feature.
