Looking for suggestions for my 75 top. Pros/Cons, Added weight/ will white fade? Thanks for all help! Steve.

Mine was painted white when I got it. I durabak'd it black some years ago and it's holding up well. It adds more weight than paint, but unless you're stripping the truck down to the bones to reduce weight (in which case you wouldn't use the topper anyway), weight isn't an issue.

Even with UV coatings paint, durabak, linex etc. all will fade to some degree. I can scrub 90% of any oxidation off my topper without showing scratch marks.

I think either way you go will work. Just a personal choice.

Thanks for the info. The reason I was asking about the weight was when I take the top off/on. Thanks again. Steve.

you'll NEVER notice any weight from the finish...

garaunteed you'll get quicker and more oxidation from any bedliner than any quality catalyzed paint tho....

Well yea, but there's the added fun of liner rash that you just don't get with paint. :eek1: Oh, and bedliner on the exterior is a guy magnet (FYI for us ladies) :D:p:

Can you get the do it yourself stuff in colors? I would do this but black makes the inside too hot in the summer in Reno.

Yep, the kits come in black, grey, or tan. For a bit extra I can get you any of the the colors I stock for it. Check our store out at http://www.tscoating.com/store to see the colors we've got.

Also running a special for CK5 members right now. Gallons for $60 and guns for $40. That's $50 off of retail. :)

What kind of prep did you have to do before rolling the durabak the top?

Cleaned it with a scrub brush with soap and water twice, which also removed any flaky paint. Then wiped it well with Xylene per their instructions. Taped off around the windows. That's it. Then roll the stuff on.

BTW, I looked at the Scorpion product. Probably would have gone that way if it had been available then, for the UV protection.

When the time comes for me it will be DURABAK (white) on mine. I talked to a guy at the company and they were very nice and courteous. They will send you color chips on metal so you can see the colors.

I was born and raised in Reno and I used to work at Re-Neva on the corner of Mira Loma and Longley Ave. They sell auto body paint and body shop supplies. They'll have exactly what you need.

i used interlux fiberglass bottomkote on my '74 top. it's for the bottom of boats so obviously it's weatherproof and holy christmas does it ever turn out nice. it's a textured finish but it looks soooooo good. i can send you some pics if you want. i don't know what's in it but the can says it's illegal in some states :S so maybe not your best choice. look into it though. i'm 100% satisfied. i got it at canadian tire which i realize you don't have but you could probably order it off the internet or something...

Yep, if you could send some pictures, that would be great. Top will be off within the month for the summer and it would be great to get it painted then. Did it add much weight? Thanks, Steve.

if you had've asked yesterday i could have had pictures right away but it snowed today so now i'll have to wait till the snow melts (even if i cleaned it you can't see the texture cuz there's a coat of ice under the snow) i don't know if it added weight or not. my cap was in pretty rough shape and didn't have the original paint when i got it. had some wierd fungus that had fused with the fibreglass actually but that's another story. anyway, i'm 16, 6'2" 140 lbs: stick thin, and i can pick the thing up on my back and walk around so you shouldn't have a problem.

ummm, you do know that stuff is LOADED with copper and very unhealthy...

at least you'll never have to worry about barnacles! :wink1:

ok so it's been more than a day but i got the pictures. i only have pictures of the sides because the top has hoods and other parts on it which i didn't really want to move :P but you can see from the close up, it's a textured finish and i think it looks amazing.
