So I have an 1984 2wd F150 Explore I like to tool around in and I took it to lawrence last night to watch the KU vs NC game and after the game we drove down town to celabrate and I parked in a buddies yard. I went back to start it later and I wasn't getting any power from the ignition switch to the solinoid. Just for good measure I installed a new start solinoid and bump started it by shorting the power wire going in to the solinoid to the coil side and it started right up. It didn't sound quite right but didn't think much of it. I was standing there talking to a buddy after I started it about how it "sounded weird" and he agreed. About 30-45 seconds after I started it, it made a very bad sound (don't know how to describe) So I shut her down and noticed my negative off the battery was very warm. I decided to replace it and then when I went to bump start it again all hell broke loose. The starter was locked up and the solinoid was stuck in the closed position. (OH S***) I didn't have a extinguiser handy and my positive wire and start solinoid were smokin' like a tire fire. I was running around screaming "shut her down, shut her down!" but she was shut down. Upon investigation I belive the solinoid I installed got stuck in the close position when I bumped it and since it started right up I didn't notice the starter was still engaged. So I think the funny noise we heard was the start self destructing. So when I replaced the negative and tried it again we hit melt down. The truck is 45 minutes from my house! Tomorrow I am going to go put on a starter, solinoid, battery cables, and what ever else melted down. Any ideas on why this happened? Anyone know if the power for the solinoid comes straight from the igniton switch in the colum? I am going to dig out my haynes manual at start looking but thought I would see what you all thought! Thanks!
