im thinking about buying a box truck, something around 24 feet, using the rear for a garage and the front for a rv/type set up.

I have started looking into ins, and I already have storage covered. the ins is not as bad as I thought as I already have a commercial policy with some high numbers do to my business needs. also for days when I really need some enclosed space this would be a very very nice set up to work out of! sometimes I am at a job site for 3 days and im limmited by an 8 foot truck bed as it is..

im on the fence if I go to an oil butner, mainly for maint/repair cost reasons. im pretty sure my 6.0 lifted gas truck towing a trailer and buggy would get just as bad mpg as a 24 foot box truck.

any thoughts or examples? things to look out for? This seems like a nice concealed set up.

a truck like this

Whats wrong with a trailer behind your SFA 2007 6.0 liter 2500HD ? You can put a slide in in the bed , and remove it when you get home :dunno:

Seems easier to use what you got .

Why not buy a 24ft enclosed trailer. You got a buggy it should fit inside. Then tow it with your truck. Or maybe even a toyhauler if you are going to start wheelin more long trips.

Rob is selling the Taj too if you want a redneck toyhauler.

Also when I moved from CO to AZ this time I rented a 26' Penske boxtruck with the Diesel. Got about 8-10 mpg loaded towing a trailer with a Toyota Corolla on it. Big hills got the truck down to 30mph though and this was a newer (04+) truck. But it was also very governed I am sure.

It isn't a terrible idea but would take some work to pull off right. I would buy a diesel for sure. A gasser is going to get half the mileage of the diesel and you will be working the gasser really hard. It will be working a diesel hard too but not like a gasser, at least diesels are built for the abuse.

Maintaining a diesel isn't as expensive as most people think as long as you do the stuff to keep it up. Sure you have 3 gallons of oil in it but you don't need to change it every 3-5K like you do with a gasser. I am going 15-18K on an oil change in my CTD.

Matt has been thinking about doing something similar with a School bus. Chop the arse end off for a flatdeck and modify the front for sleeping quarters. It isn't hard to find school buses with recently overhauled motors for cheap if you look around. My GF's uncle has gotten them for $3K with 30K on the motor since overhaul. He cuts them up for farm equipment.

I looked at the school bus idea but it is way easier to get ins for a cab & chassis 1 ton chevy or ford than a old school bus, cheaper too.

One thing that has been on my mind a bit is that I now have a truck that I have put some time and money into not to mention a solid axel, so the idea of towing out to florance and then parking my truck there with a trailer all darn day while its asking to get jacked with new chrome wheels and iroks.. it a nice parts rig for someone im sure.:(

then if im in a hotel, or even just in a walmart I would have a truck, with a trailer and buggy sitting in the parking lot..

seems an enclosed all in one rig would be the ticket, i thought about buying a used dodge with a cummins, like fred did, but that does not solve the campoer part, or the fact that my trailer is not enclosed. 5 to 12 k for the dodge, plus the enclosed trailer..plus the camper$$$

or.. a 3-5k ex u-haul already enclosed, a u-haul also has a much lower deck than most box trucks too.

I dunno just starting the thinking on this, im really into the pull it in, strap it down get in and leave idea. plus it would be a great set up when used for work! add the fact that there are 3 females in my family that move all the darn time..it just sounds better and better.

problem with both these ideas..

my truck is too tall to do a goose neck..

and with aout a goose neck a trailer like that would give me a work out to control with my truck I think

You can get toyhaulers that are not goosenecks. My neighbor has one.

What ever you do do NOT buy a used Uhaul. You will regret EVERY minute of it. They don't do maintanence on them unless they break down and there "mechanics" are basically just monkey's with tools.

If you do go that route look at something from Penske, Ryder, Budget, but not Uhaul.

the school bus idea sounds cool...just junk all those seats, setup tool boes, couch, mini fridge, tv and a couple beds...i'm serious, it'd be sick i want to do it.

I was all set to do this kind of bus build when my wife found out and threatened to make me live in it. I said fine. I'll park it by the garage and you can have the house. She said she'd burn both to the ground.

Needless to say, I don't own a bus. Yet.:D
