I'm trying to help a buddy out that has a '73 land cruiser. the problem is that he has to pump twice on the brakes to be able to engage them.

we had to replace his MC because of a leak, so we bleeded it good. and rebled it at all 4 wheels. we still have the issue.

it does have a power brake booster on it (I assume from a later model), and 4 wheel drums. I'm fairly certain that we bled it well, but unless the booster itself could cause the problem I'm unsure where to go from here.

any ideas?

thanks for the info. I knew this was the wrong board for toy info, but figured one of you guys would know where to look. :D

betting the brakes are just out of adjustment. since my chevy has self adjusters, I didn't even think of that.

since my chevy has self adjusters

They rarely work properly.

My roommate has a 69 FJ with drums, and it has the same issue.

We're just stoked it works as good as it does right now...:haha:

Yep, if you have drum brakes, and have a good pedal after the two pumps, no sponginess, then its almost always an adjustment.

With my Ford, even though it has front disks, after a couple of weeks in the swamp, I start getting a low pedal.
A quick slide under with a brake spoon, and I have a good pedal again.

I'm pretty sure that brakes out of adjustment was the issue, but we pulled the MC back off so we could check the booster out, just to be on the safe side. the seal around the part that leads to the MC was torn, so it was leaking vacuum like crazy. I put my thumb over the hole, and suddenly the engine starts running better than it ever has he says. LOL

also, the old MC must have been leaking brake fluid into the booster because it was about 1/2 full of brake fluid. :eyeroll: he's off to the junkyard to find another tomorrow.

again, knowing this isn't exactly the right place to ask, but anyone know if there is a toyota equivilant of LMC or something? trying to find a place to point him for some odd ball parts he needs.

both links are great. I'll send him that direction. thanks for the help jms.

Specter is good...you might try the Toyota dealer too I was surprised that the prices were not that bad. I used to buy lots of parts from Toyota.

Cheapest thing to do to an old landcruiser is convert it to chevy parts and minitruck axles. Then everything is dirt cheap and easy to come by!
