C3500HD tow rig

Primary vehicle for towing trailers
I'd love to get this bed for my super duty. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1132868377129043 probably a little long though.

Fair amount of cutting but simple enough to make it work.

Want to get the wrecker mast on my bed, won't be until the spring though it looks like. Having lifting equipment is very handy.

With the suspension going the 4 link with airbags route. The HD has a panhard bar from the factory and crossover steering, the dana 60 sitting here of course will need some welding done first and a few other things before it goes under the truck.

Installed a new intake manifold, little bit of performance upgrade and adds a place for a boost sensor to get plumbed in.

For the winter the truck won't get much besides necessary maintenance while I'm financially focusing on paying off the 5th wheel trailer by march. After that this truck gets priority. Some power, cooling, and reliability upgrades for the engine along with suspension and the bed. Have new injectors sitting here waiting for springtime to be installed.

Engine work:
Injectors (maintenance)
Turbo (ranges from $350-$1400 depending on modifying stock turbo or a complete better unit)
Air intake
Water pump
Thermostat
Radiator (maybe)
Fluid damper to replace harmonic balancer
Gauges

The planned second round of work will be the front axle swap and air ride. Start with the front by rebuilding the dana 60 and getting it modified to the 10 lug pattern.

3rd round is the bed. Going to need some storage boxes but first need to look at everything the truck carries so there will be enough (but not too much) cargo space. Between the wrecker mast, spare tire, and extra fuel it's quite a bit of space occupied then add in some tools/spare fluids/hitches/lifting equipment and the tiny hotshot bed design I had in mind could be a problem.

Set out most of the regular cargo that will need to go in a bed box. All 3 boxes are 18x18, then 2ft for the top box and 5ft for both lower boxes. Everything will fit in 1 of the 5ft boxes including the spare parts/fluids.

5 changes that need to happen for this bed.
1. Stock rear tank has to be replaced because it's too long. Since it was damaged anyways and I have a 20 gallon fuel cell that will fit there anyways it won't be much work.

2. Truck frame has to be shortened, just cut the extra off the end.

3. Bigger second fuel tank needs to go where the driver side box is. Either cut the box off (its welded on pretty good) or extend the box just a little and shove the 11x17x60 fuel tank inside the box.

4. Cut out the built in gooseneck hitch and swap in the B&W center section along with the air ride hitch. This i don't currently have the welding capabilities for.

5. Remove the top box. Welded in place just like the other 2.

Have a sandblasting guy scheduled in late February

Bed install is coming up soon. Got the top box removed and the auxiliary fuel tank installed just in front of the headache rack.

Made progress on the bumper in the meantime. Cut the diamond plate valence off of it, where it was designed to line up with the grill from the early 2000's GM trucks since it doesn't match up and was blocking airflow to the bottom of the radiator. Being that airflow is a big problem with this body style and the HD's are better about it due to the lower grill, figured it would be best to keep that airflow capability. That's the reason I didn't go with the bumper designed for this body style 3/4-1 ton trucks.

Just after the cut.

Gonna be headed back to Utah in August, have 3 semesters left to finish my bachelors degree and since I hurt my elbows last fall figure it's time to get away from physical labor jobs.

Sold the 1 ton and using some of the money to focus on the HD. Original turbo was worn out, even with the wastegate wired shut it wasn't able to make boost anymore so went ahead and upgraded to a performance turbo. Super 54, from Quadstar tuning. Seems to match up perfectly for the low-mid range rpm that I drive the truck at. Higher boost at the rpm's needed, lower EGT's, lower turbo drive pressure and not terribly expensive either.

Now for the gin pole bed. Stripped the stuff off the tail end of the frame, planning to do the cutting either today or tomorrow, then place the bed on the truck when the lifting equipment rental gets here later this week. Being that the stock fuel tank has a hole in the bottom of it (patched with JB Weld last year) decided to go ahead and go with the shorter option.

to bad your so far away . my new to me 3500-HD needs a trailer hitch . but your prob going to just re-drill the holes and bolt it up .

Will be curious to hear how you like the new turbo. Mine is still good but looking for something to help my ol girl out with towing.

Actually not going to use it, the bed has a rear hitch built in and the leaf spring hangers are in the way.

Only 10k rated but if interested shoot me an offer.

Even with the stock tune, empty is a significant improvement. Can hear the turbo by 1400rpm and pulls stronger up through the mid 2000's.

Headed back to Utah in late July/early August so I can finish my bachelor's degree so will have a good towing trip at that point.

yaa shipping would kill it tho . . . i been looking but not finding much unless i just go off 34" frame specs and drill N bolt .

still need a flatbed on it so i will do that first and then just fab a BEEFY hitch . :pimp:

What holes, bolts?
All I see is a patchwork of metal pieces to weld it on.
Am I missing anything?
You can make a better one from scratch for less than the shipping cost

making my own = drill holes and bolt up .

by the time he ships to me its 1,200 + miles . . . i can built one for same or less .

Woohoo the bed is secured, rolling tailboard moves again, fuel tank in location. Have to modify the headache rack to make room for the winch because it was damaging the fuel tank when stuffed in there. Doing that tomorrow along with filling the tank and plumbing.

Still have taillights to mount and wire in.

Just curious but what does a bed setup like this generally weigh?

Average 6in C 10.5 lbs per ft 205 lbs
Average 4in C 5.4 lbs per foot about 325 lbs
About 400 lbs diamond plate
Add in the 2 5ft boxes, roller, gin poles, and headache rack, I'd estimate about 1200 lbs for this 10ft bed. Not including tools/spare parts/etc.

Fuel tank got plumbed in and fuel transferred to it so its able to move under its own power once again. Pulled the old tail lights and light wiring off.
