Has anyone done a 'legal' cab swap in CA. I know DMV says u cant do it, 'without permission'.

So you can remove and replace your VIN, 'with permission'

I found out today that my cab has more rust than previously known. And replacing the cab would be a better way to go than all the work required to fix the rust.

I have rust all around the front window, and around the cowl. I didnt notice it until I removed the fenders and get a good look at the cab.

Any knowledge would be good. I know where there is a 3+3 that is being parted out. With a good cab.

I know you asked about Cali., but here's what I did. I had the title to both cabs, so I swapped from a 'burb to a crew cab.........that is still titled as a 'burb, with the 'burb vin plate. If anybody asks, I tell 'em that I cut the back of the 'burb off and welded a cab wall in. Most people say "damn you do good work" and I say "yes I do". :haha:

I am looking for someone who has delt with this is california.

I know I can do it, I just want to do it legally.

IIRC as long as you have a clean title for each vehicle it can be done legally. I think you have to bring both titles to the DMV and once the swap is done take the vehicle to a referee where he will assign a new VIN sticker in the door jamb.

I had an old bug that had two VIN's and no title. The girl at AAA said "we will just use this one" on the pan. I got home and took the plate off the body and put it in the trash. I HIGHLY recommend AAA for this. They did mine with ease and even told me what to write in the boxes and where. Like I bought it on a bill of sale only from a wrecking yard that is no longer in business.......... :D

Sounds good. You really need to stand in that wonderful DMV line and ask them all your questions. Mine is titled '85, with an '86 frame, and replacement VIN in the door jam. Can't help u though, bought it like that :(

havent done it personally. but my buddy bought a truck that is a 84 k5 frame, with a 74 c10 cab.
its titled as a 74, i dont know how it was done or what had to be done, but i know that it can be done, since his truck is legit & street legal.

i would also say use AAA if you can to register it. they do the hard work for you, if not just make an appt and go to DMV.

good luck.
