any of you cali folk live anywhere near or been to the Salton Sea?
I have been to go camping in the spring and it was hot as ****. K10andy and his Bro live out that way. I have not wheeled out there but I know some of the Cali guys on here have.
The salton sea???? Where is that at???? Ive never heard of the slaton sea before lol
At the risk of being invited to the HiPinion BBQ. It is out in the desert of California a little North East of El Centro. It was formed back in the day when a levee broke on the Colorado and flooded a low valley area. Was a fresh water lake and over the years with evaporation and little to no water replenishing it it has become salty. Salty enough to be about twice that of the ocean but not as salty as the Great Salt Lake.
Now back to out regularly scheduled program.
Theres too much stuff to do in Ca , ill put that down as another "to go to" place "
Someone was watching the History Channel: Engineering Disasters.
Make sure you go in winter and take sum yo BBQ.
I was just down there and I'm going back in a couple weeks for TDS. One of my favorite places to wheel (Truckhaven) is right across from the lake
Okay but it better be good Also a link would be nice, to this place
haha, well, i'm not really sure you want to..
its a very bizzare place.. big resort back in the 50's and such.. now its pretty much a ghost town... the salt killed everything, some rediculously high percentage... smells like rotten eggs....
the main reason for this posting was actually not about wheeling, tho apparently there is quite a bit in the area...
how i originally heard of this place and saw pics was thru my skating.. i know a few guys that have gone there.. all the boarded up hotels have some killer skatable pools...
but i was more curious as to the locals that apparently live there and the strangness of the place... who the heck stayed and lives there? i've heard its quite a strange situation.... tales of hotel hauntings too... wooooowoooooooo!!
haha, ya it reminded me... i had done research on it before... but wanted to get some real live reactions to what the place is like....
There is tons of agriculture still in the area just not on the shores of the lake itself. Also due to the high salinity the water is very bouyant. Therefore boats draft less and are wicked fast.
ha, never thought of that..
from what i read and all tho, it sounds if the area isn't really very safe because of all the decay and whatnot... do they actually boat there?
i seem to remember the show saying something about the agriculture being a part of the original prob too.... the place just intrigued me....
Here is a IR satellite image of the salton sea. All of the red is crops they appear red because they give off more IR heat.
We actually got in the water and rode seadoos. The only problem with the water is when there is an algea bloom and it knocks out some fish. If there is no algea bloom it is not that bad.
huh, interesting... yeah, i saw those doing my google search but didn't realize the crop thing....
what kinda stuff is grown out that way?
Just about any kind of produce imaginable. Pretty much the same stuff they grow in the San Fernando Valley.
cool.. thanks for all the info.. nice to get it from real peeps...
do you know anything of these apparent "strange" locals or anything?
I did not see any locals but I would think you would have to be pretty strange to actually LIVE up on the lake. There are quite a few of abandoned hotels and "resorts" up there that look like they could be haunted. The whole area looks sorta like where "The Devil's Rejects" would live.
haha, awesome, kinda what i figured... i found it all to be an interesting place, albeit, strange and kinda sad.. thanks man....
