I am in the process of doing the 3/4 ton conversion to my front ten bolt.

The backing plates and calipers have rust on them. It appears to just be surface rust on both.

I will be grinding the calipers to fit 15 inch wheels , so I will be getting most of the rust off on them. But the backing plates , I was thinking about putting a wire wheel on my angle grinder or just using a wire brush to get the rust of them?

Next question is....do I get brake specific paint for the calipers and plates? Primer, etc?

I used rustoleum rusty metal primer on mine after wire brushing/grinding them clean. Then just the same paint I used on the axles. It's holding up well so far

A twisted wire cup brush on the angle grinder is the shiznit for getting surface rust and scale and crud off.

Note it's also great for removing skin with little or no warning :eek1: , and the cheap ones (which are all I buy  ) are good for flinging wires at the speed of light. It's like having your own railgun, except you don't know where the projectiles will go ... they seem to be heat-seeking, inasmuch they end up impaling my feet or my stomach. :doah:

As for paint type, I seem to recall doing my last set of calipers with engine / high-heat paint, but that mighta been because that's what I happened to have available.
