Calling all boat mechanics

I’m thinking I’m going to try to check the motor alignment and hope that it’s a freak accident. I did check the gimble bearing when I had the drive off last year and the boots are all good so it shouldn’t be bad. I’m gonna try to go by and snap some pictures of the props but I’m with the others, I’ve seen some really bad props and that’s why those never crossed my mind.
Here’s a pic of one way to destroy a coupler. Make sure you have your plug out when your boat isn’t in the water or this will happen. Lol

I have about a 1/2 dozen vulva , a dozen alphas and 50 to 60 Bravo's to install over the next 6 weeks... :doah:

yesterday's fun..... water tube window..... ;)

@Scribbles you'll need an alignment shaft to check alignment... just spin the gimble with your fingers, if it's the slightest bit "grainy" replace it...

that's a crusty-ass drive @ryoken

considering the black hose in the hole is outside the boat, yeah.. boat sank at the end of last yr, we told him we wouldn't resplash it this yr unless it was fixed... tho he begged us and said he "had a new bilge pump" new transom assembly next week...

this is BY FAR the craziest spring commissioning I've ever had coming up.. we are beyond stooopid busy.. stored 40 more boats, the marina is almost full slip-wise..... it'll be a freaking miracle if we can get our memorial day weekend load done.. thankfully i was able to put a big deck recore job off until july... but even than, we're screwed..

my absolute kingdom for a decent trainee... I'd kill for a go-getter 19, 20 yr old thats willing to bust ass, get some tools.... I'll teach you ANYTHING you could ever want to learn.. but all the young ones we hire want to hide in the bathroom and have their i-phones glued to their face and those are just yard help...

Yeah I know, mine was great last time, if it’s bad then maybe that’s my problem but I highly doubt it.

I was in the business for 4years, I know what you mean. That’s why my issue has me stumped, I never saw one let alone two fail in the same boat! Thankfully I left my employment in very good graces and I can get the alignment tool. I still don’t think alignment is my problem but I also don’t think this is a fluke so I’m taking every precaution possible. I hate pulling a perfectly good motor. :doah:

back in the late 80's , I bought a 18 ft Bayliner with a small block Chevy/Volvo out drive - brand new... My dad always bought old junk boats and was forever working on them and getting stranded offshore.( cough OMC cough) So I learned a lot about out drives etc. by the school of hard knocks.
I knew that Volvo's are stupid strong and the boat I bought was very fast for what it was, 18 ft cuddy cabin cruiser. .. I had tons of fun and surprised many jet boat and tunnel hull owners by outrunning or keeping up with them..

Of course as a gear head, I waited until the warranty expired, and then got the itch to pull the engine and build some serious horsepower,, I was talking to the guys at the boat shop about my build plans and they told me that the drive would handle the power with no problem, but that even if I doubled the horsepower, the boat would only gain about 5-7 mph due to the hull design.
Apparently once a boat reaches it's critical design speed, it takes a whole lot of power to go faster... I played with many props, and had many different pitches, diameters cupped, cuts, choppers etc. .. it was good to know the owner of one of the largest prop build shop in Houston...

OMC, what a trainwreck those drives where.... vulva's work great when they work.. some of their design aspects are nice and simple and better than a merc.. shift lever for example... but a lot of the rest is a complete design/repair nightmare.. transom plate mounted trim cylinders, among a few other things, where some of the stooopidest ideas I've ever seen... keep us updated @Scribbles

I will, any advice on checking motor height is appreciated. I still don’t see how if the drive slides in fine it would cause this issue but it’s the only thing I can think of that might cause the issue so I’m gonna check it.

Would you say if the alignment tool fits don’t worry about it or go ahead and check it?

that's not how the tool works.. take the alignment tool and coat the end with grease.... not a ton, but say 1/8" all the way around.. slide it all the way in... carefully take it straight out and check the grease marked spline pattern left on it... it should be even all the way around.. any undisturbed areas indicate it out of alignment.. or if it actually "catches" the spline on the way in... down in the front is a "hard" pattern on bottom and unmarked on top... adjust mounts, repeat..
