can an alternator melt wires?

if it goes bad, somehow? I'm pretty sure it's my alt. that blowing my fusible links, but didn't know that was possible. It's a CS144 alternator, installed without the resistor in the L wire:o, and the fusible link (I believe) is on the S wire.
 
How IS the voltage reading in your truck. Had my CS-130 voltage regulator spike one time, hasn't happened again, yet.
