Can BBC Heads really cost this much?

Absolutely. Especially with all that port work. A good set of AFR's will run around 3,000. Port them and your looking at quite a bit more. The price of a good set of aluminum heads is the only thing that is stopping me from building a 540 for my truck.

thanks for the info guys...I was just shocked when I saw the price tag but now that you mention the port work thats what probably bumped up the price as there could be quite a few man hours into those already...

I figured a set of aluminum heads could run that much if not more but not cast iron ones...

It almost looks like they went a little far. The intake valves are a little low too. I would insist on seeing flow numbers from a bench and if possible be there to listen to the sound the port makes. If there is a flow problem and the air starts to tumble you can hear the flow breakup and become turbulent. When that happens it becomes a chokepoint in the airflow. But that might be a cheap set of well ported heads or an expensive set of badly ported heads. You want expensive check out this guys work. www.raceflowdevelopment.com

I was looking at doing a BBC swap for my '90 K5 and I was surprised how much more BBC stuff costs. I went with a 383.

i have almost $700 into my 049 oval port heads (including the purchase of the heads, the cost of sand to sand blast them and all the parts and machine work done to them). thats not half bad as long as it doesn't need any more work (ie valve job or seals, etc.)
