Can someone read a gear pattern for me?

Pinion needs to be deeper, change it by .005" and take another pattern.

Thin the gear marking compound out. Mix it 75% gear oil 25% compound. Lay it on the gears as thin as you can.

the depth od the gear pattern shows how close the pinion is to the ring gear and also how the carrier sits in relation to the pattern.most gear companies will have a certain pattern that they have to adhere to upon setup.
i think the pinion is too far away.need to keep adding .005 thickness an add more until good pattern is achieved.usually only need 1 or 2 when you are as close as you are.

One shim was added and the backlash tightend up to nil. He is going to adjust the side shims and then recheck.
yeah backlash is easily adjusted by the side shims....... you know whats nice though here at work we have the tubes and gauges for the dana 28-70 and every ford axle.... you have to be and idiot to set one up wrong.

More depth was added and side shims were removed. Pattern looks better, but still not quite right(he thinks). His wife has his camera in Minnesotta and we are in TX. I am going over tomorrow afternoon to help out again and will post more pics then.

We got someone to read the pattern after several small changes and it is good now. We have had no luck trying to find an in/lb torque wrench to set the pinion bearing preload. Will continue the search tomorrow. For those that helped, thank you very much.
Yeah, I've been after my snap-on rep to find me an old beam style 3/8 drive in-lb torque wrench..... no luck so I keep borrowing the transmission guys.

We are going to try a quick one on the post auto craft shop. We are going to get a flat bay for an hour, check out a torque wrench, take it to his house and set the preload tehn take it back and hope they don't notice us not working in the bay.
