i've got a warn m8000 winch that i have had since 8-25-2009. i've used it about 4 times now. it won't free spool. the lever will not budge. it goes halfway and stops. it will work with the control but i can't pull the cable with it free spooling. i've tried hooking up to a tree and another truck to pull it out and nothing. anyone know what is going on with this? i did sink the winch the last time out. everything was completely under water. do i need to take it apart or send it to warn?

Call Warn about it. I doubt being under water had anything to do with it. Mine has been under water and mud a few times with no issues.

Mine did that and I took the planetary apart and cleaned and re-greased it. It was pretty corroded and had never been underwater. The "clutch" sleeve can get corroded and not want to slide off of the gears. It took me about an hour. I resealed it with RTV and had no issues with it.

thanks for the tips guys. i called warn and talked to them. they told me there is probably some dirt or water got in there and won't let it slide. very good customer service. i am going to pull the lever out and look in there. if there is some dirt in there i will clean it out. they said if that doesn't work send it back under warranty. i will take a look at it this weekend and see what is in there.

I haven't done too much work with warn winches, but I know on the PTO driven military winch that rests on a M35, you have to engage the clutch on it or its going NOWHERE.
