I remember a long time ago a member on here converted a semi (class B I think, it didn't swivel) box truck over to a huge flat bed and had it for sale. Do you guys remember who that was?

I purchased a Freightliner ex-FedEx expeditor. It's not very easy, and not for the faint of heart (parts are expensive, and the materials list is far more substantial than what most folks are used to).

Mine is sold now (it was bought by a guy who put it back into commercial use). I'll build another HDT tow rig, but not for a few more years. I'll do a Volvo 770 condo sleeper next time.

Also, the whole "legality" issue of HDTs as RVs, and RV registration/insurance, are as complex as a college Calc 2 text book to Forrest Gump....I'm not even gonna get into all that mess. It's a hassle, and TON of legwork.

Like the other guys said though. Tags and Insurance are to expensive to only use it a few times out of the year.

I don't know the insurance regulations in the US, but up here you can license & insure a truck like that for personal use for much less than commercial/business. You can further reduce the cost by only licensing it for as much GVW as you plan to use. Seems odd if Canada is the only place that has this sort of insurance structure.

You can do the same here. I'm not sure but I think the lowest you can license it for is 16k lbs. You can also insure it as a personal vehicle.

There was an 86 c-60 at the body shop I work at last week (new front bumper and fiberglass nose repair) it was a public works truck, automatic with detroit diesel. It also had a flatbed with a crane. I think they used it for sewer work or something. Before I saw this thread I was thinking that one of these trucks would make a sweet hauler.
