So thanks to dremu I now have one each of the air baffle things that went on the end of the cold air intake tube(s) where they go into the core support. I have one of each style (or at least two different styles) that GM used on our trucks. They're both in good shape so it's hard to tell which is older. One is a bit larger than the other in all dimensions (no, I haven't made it to the truck to check which should fit yet...downpour...honey do list...lame excuses...) but they both appear similar in style otherwise.

Anybody know which should fit a 83-86 time frame pickup and which is better? Just curious as to why GM changed size?

Could be to let more air in or that the bigger one let too much water in...

I have three here, all on core supports. Example #1 is on an '83 core support from a C30 6.2 powered pick-up. 6" round (no flat section like your's appears to have.

Example #2, also an '83 core support in my '83 6.2 powered half ton...same 6" round intake.

Example #3 is an '87 TBI 350 version in my '87 Crew cab (one ton). Oddly enough, it's the same 6" round version.

Based on my fleet here they used the 6" round style from '83-'87 and it wasn't a diesel only thing.

i'm thinking the smaller one might be an '82 version?

I think dremu said the smaller one might have been 70's era but that might just be my imagination.

With any luck everything I touch won't turn to **** tomorrow after work and I can start working on it then.

Pretty sure one came off a '74 Burb front clip. The other came from Scott (4X4HIGH) and I don't remember if he told me what it came off, and I really don't know which is which :doah:(I am getting old!)

I'm guessing both are from '70's era trucks...

The '81 and newer ones like I have don't mount with screws, they're a twist lock design.

Maybe the larger one is from a big block truck?

Oh, BTW...I have an extra 6" round twist lock style that'll fit your core support here. pm me an addy and I'll mail it to you.

Whichever one you got from Dremu (can't remember myself now) IIRC i took it from a 1976 vehicle.

Yep, my '85 k10 has the twist lock design (although they don't twist or lock anymore)... they just pop on and I check them from time to time...

Yep, haven't seen any '81+ that don't just twist into place.

That, however, is solely for the trucks that have a straight air intake tube from the air cleaner to core support...no diesel silencer, no weird pickup piece behind the core support, etc.

I don't believe the '81+ even have dimples for any screws in the core support in that area.

The CUCV's didn't come with anything there. The air filter housing just has the inlet open to space and the knock out in the core support is there but isn't knocked out.

Okay, finally got around to this. Looks like it's 4" wide. Rene, happen to know if yours would fit? Expect a PM in a moment.

The little one I have will almost drop right through the hole so it's a definite no. Anyone want it for the cost of shipping?

The big one is a bit more oblong in shape but I think I could make it work in there by just drilling a few holes. Not really wanting to do that though.

So does the air intake tube off of a pre-97 Dodge Dakota with the V6 or V8. Dremu clued me into that one.

Yeah that's right, you have an in there.

None of the big name local yards would sell me just the intake tube so I was about ready to go that route until a small local yard guy told me if they had one it was $10. A short walk and $10 later I had one.
