ok so i just got really lucky and ended up with a corp 14 and a dana 70. one is going under my truck i just dont know enough about either to decide myself, help. also measuring from the middle of each spring perches the 14 is a bit wider than my 10, is that normal, can it bolt in that way? the dana 70 is about the exact width between spring perches as my 10 but damn that thing is heavy. any way your advice would be greatly appreciated. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

You need to find out what you have first. I am almost positive the D70 is from a 1 ton and the spring perch width is 40.5" and would need to be moved apart 2" more. If the 14BFF is wider than it could be a passenger van 14BFF whichis 4" wider than your 10B. That is a highly wanted axle.

Things that make a big difference in this decision are cost and how big of a tire do you ultimately want to run (which leads to how much gear do you want)? The D70 will cost more to build (based on the diff cost) but it can offer sooo many more options with respect to gear. Depending on the version D70 you have rear disc can be tricky.

Also, the measurement to mainly be concerned with first is the overall width (from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface). If either of the axles are drastically wrong in width then there is no question of which to use.

70 is more close to a 3/4 ton axle, its what they put in the 2500 dodges
the d80 is what is usually in the 1 ton, or the heavy duty 2500s.

the 70 is going to cost you more to rebuild. and will prob be heavier then the 14 bolt. 14bolt parts are easier to obtain and more likely to find guys with 14 bolt parts if needed imho. I have an 80 on my dodge, but a 14bolt on my burban.

In 73-87 C and K30s, D70s are actually the axles used in the highest GVW ratings, and 14 bolts are relegated to the 3/4 and lower GVWR 1 tons.

The D70 is a true 1 ton axle. It has a 10.54" axle compared to a 10.5" in a 14 bolt. Both axles have 1.5" axles with the D70 usually being 35 spline (depending on application) and the 14 bolt being 30 spline. BTW - the 14 bolt was used in 3/4 tons too.

The D80 has a (roughly) 11.5" ring gear and was introduced into the Dodge line to deal with the power of the CTD. This axle was most likely originally intended to have a higher than 1 ton rating since it first saw service in the older (pre 99) Super Duty Fords and 3500HD Chevy's.

I agree.

I'd say do the 14...cheaper /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
then sell the D70....prolly get more for it then a 14bolt...just cuz they arent as common!

[/ QUOTE ]IIRC the D80 has a 11" ring gear, I think.

70s are much more common than 14 bolts, just most people limit their search for 70s to GM trucks and forget that other brands used (and still use) them for years.

check to make sure that your D70 is not one of the 32 spline versions....

I got one of those in the backyard right now... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

For parts availability and price I would go for the 14 Bolt - but if maximum gear is in your future than a Dana 70 is the ticket !
Dana 70's have been offered in MANY versions and spline counts so tear it down and inspect or run the B.O.M. number if you do not know what it is.

I am taking the 14 Bolt out of my Blazer and replacing it with a "B" series Dana 70 instead due to a gear change .

For what it is worth , the Dana 80's are 11.25" in diameter.

Nobody has mentioned the increased ground clearance a 70 offers over the huge pumpkin of the 14B. Also, if it's like my D70U, the bottom of the pumpkin is smooth with nothing to catch on rocks and such. And, disagree with whoever said 70's are more common. Of all y time spent in the junkyard, I have come across MANY 14 bolts. I have only come across a few 70's. I got mine out of an '85 Ford f-250, but have seen them under Dodges as well. I have seen a LOT of rear 60's too. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

If the Dana 70 is 35 spline I would say run it.Stregnth wise the 70 is equal to if not a little greater than the 14 bolt. The 70 has more clearance also.

The only thing cheaper when building a 14 bolt is the price of a Detroit (if ya want one)An ARB is available for the 70 .Parts availablity is the same between the 14 and 70.Gearing for the 70 is available down to 7.17 /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gifBearings,gears (70s are easier to get),and brakes n stuff cost about the same.I know,I have built both /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gifI swapped out my 14 bolt for a 70 cuz I didnt wanna be stuck with 5.13s.

I agree with you on that! I have seen a bunch more broken 70s then 14 bolts at work.
