Cracked ears for starter mount.

Well damn….don’t know if the ole Detroits used those brackets or not - I would think they would since so much else is in common.
Did we miss this or was it not mentioned ?
Either way I hope the welding job works for ya’.
Yes they have the nose bracket on the starter. The nose brackets are very important, especially with high compression motors . These are important. All the guys that say I’ve never had a problem, they haven’t yet and may never but it’s what you risk. Usually the hot, cold and vibration start loosing up the bolts, usually the outside bolt . The starter “wiggles as it’s being started. This puts pressure on the threads. The starter will engage strange and most people think the they have a starter problem and replace the starter or catch it as loose and tighten it up. Enough times over the years the threads become loose and it get worse until it breaks the out bolt hole ear. The nose bracket. Help stabilize the starter with less stress on the threads. I recommend this bracket if you are running the factory starter. Your block is not trashed but you will need an old welder(guy) to fix this . Pull the block and heat the cast iron…. “V” where the break is and weld it. It’s been about 30 years since I’ve done one but it can be done. I don’t remember the rod type to use but I know you’ve got the heat it up really good where the break is. but please use the nose bracket. They are on eBay for around 20 bucks. Hell you can make it if your good at metal work. So you have options

Will someone tell longbedder that I have a solution for his steel building problems I cant seem to send him a message or reply to his post. I can tell him what to do to build his own shop . Thank you in advance [email protected]
I built my own without the middle men

We got it going, been holding for a few months now. I can’t post the photos here without a premium membership but we ended up grinding the whole ear off, drilled and tapped holes into the block, welded a piece of aluminum around the starter head and put bolts through it into the block. Everything was made square and filed to fit flat with some bluing. Easy? Eh. Kinda silly? Yea, but it works
