One of the places where I work as an old CUCV as a fireknocker with a 500 gallon tank on the back. I heard rumor that they might be parting with it so I looked underneath it to see if it had a d60 and a 14bff like I figured it would, but to my surprise it didn't. It had a 10b front and a 14sf rear:confused:? Think somebody pulled a swap out of an old 3/4 ton Sub or did CUCVs come like that in certain models? It is a military truck. Has the owners manual in the dash and has the military manu label beside the glove box

All the *pickup* CUCV's came with D60 front's, and either 14BFF rear or in a few cases, a dually D70 rear.

(I say *pickup* 'cuz the M1009 Blazers had 10bolt both ends.)

Does indeed sound like somebody did a swap.

Check the frame to make sure its a true 1 ton frame.

Measure the height of the rails under the doors.

Which side are the rear shocks in? Outboard of the frame rails or inboard?

Are the rear u-bolts square-bend with the threads pointing down?

I don't know about any of that. I know it doesn't have the marker lights on the roof, but as far as any of the other things like shocks, the frame:confused:, and the u-bolts I'll have to double check. But It's got the military badging inside and looks like a sm465/208 setup. I think somebody swapped the stuff out at some point.

Now I was reading the manual in the glove box and it made reference to a 3/4ton utility truck when everything else in the book was 1 1/4tons. Did the 3/4ton utility truck have the 14bsf and the 10b? That's the only thing I can think of. Anybody?

I'm pretty sure it's got the round u-bolts on the rear. I think I prob would have noticed that difference

I don't think that's a CUCV. Now, it could well be a military truck -- the plates are a dead giveaway, of course ;) The various services did buy more normal trucks from GM -- for instance, the Air Force used them as flight line and around the base, I gather. The fact that it's a stick also says it's not a CUCV.

The military data plate on the door ... does it start with something like "CUCV-UTILITY M1009"? (Obviously that one's from a Blazer, but that's the only kind I've owned and have pix of the data plate for :) )

or are we talking about about a more general plate like

Both are from the same truck, but the second one doesn't specifically identify it as a CUCV, just a guvmint truck.

it has a plate more like the second one, but it's located on the dash to the left of the glove box. I saw nothing anywhere on it that said CUCV. Truthfully I can't remember everything it said just basically a military vehicle and a bunch of codes I didn't know :D

Thats a Blazer CUCV tag. It says M1009.

Got pics of the overall truck? I wanna see what it looks like from a whole view and also pics of the axles and frame.

The VIN says "D1" which designates a Defense 1/2 ton truck, hence a Blazer.

The 5th and 6th letter/number is what identifies the vehicle.

A civilian 1 ton 4x4 would be "K3" from '81 to '86. An '87 to '91 would list "V3". Same for the 1/2 and 3/4 tons but with a "1" and "2" for the 6th number.

It was MY M1009 too ... sigh, I do miss that truck sometimes.

Anyway, point being that I suspect this truck was not a CUCV proper and was a regular service vehicle, in which case the axles are as to be expected -- and hey, it'll only have one alternator!=))

Whoops! I didn't look to see who posted the pics up. Didn't realize it was you. Thought it was carpie.

I must be slipping. I've been doing too much "whoops!" lately. Must be getting old or something. I think I need to slow down when I read posts.

my '86 K 30 is an old air force truck... gas powered (350/T400), but she's also got the Dana60 front, FF14 rear, and a 205 case...

the government also ordered 'civilian' 1/2 & 3/4 tons for grunt work around bases, and never left the country...

also soounds weird that a 'CUCV' would have an SM465, sine these trucks were supposed to be idiot proof...

check out www.steelsoldiers.com somteime...

Looks like a standard issue K20 to me.

I've heard of the Government having C and K20 trucks before.

I'd check the VIN to get a better understanding of the numbers.

Let's see...cab lights, hub caps, chrome trim on the doors, stick shift, rain gutters, complete lack of any of the military features...most definitely NOT a CUCV.

That's just a government purchased civilian K20. The government bought THOUSANDS of the 73-87(91) trucks/K5's/Suburbans over the years.

Handy visual guide to the Chevy CUCV's:

Well, some did get repainted after they left military service for second careers and the AF even painted some white.
