The 4x4 mags are gaga over the R2.8 crate engine, but it always goes into a Jeep or something small. Thing is, those Jeeps are not exactly light. Do you guys think a 2.8 would do okay in a K5, or too weak?

I thought someone had one in a k5 on here once?
@85k5witha6.2 ??

161 horse, 310 ft lbs stock. Seems like that's more then a factory smog era 350.

Yeah, 6.2 would drop right in. I have one in my CUCV pickup and I like it for the simplicity, but it is under powered. I have contemplated the idea though, especially when I get nervous about all the computer stuff and wiring in my K5 right now. 6.2 has one wire I think.

A 6.2 is only 130 horse. A 2.8 with a little more boost would probably be like 200 horse.
I think @Alan2smiley has one in his crew cab to.

Thought I read somewhere that Cummins was going to expand on the crate program and add a 6 cylinder and a v8. Who knows when or if that will happen.

I always assumed guys were gonna wait for the 5.0v8 version to come out in the crate. Seems like a better fit for our size vehicle

This is a different motor than a 4BT- I think thats what most of the guys here are referring to saying they have seen them in trucks. To my knowledge no one on here has one in there truck.

Probably, but I got to thinking how most Jeeps are at least as heavy as my K5. Isn't that really what matters? Personally, I'm not crazy for horsepower and place value on not having to shoehorn the engine into the space.

I think they were developed more as a crate replacement for the 4.0 or 4 bangers. Not the 3.6 that Jeeps have now. I don’t think I’ve actually seen a jk with the R2.8. All are TJs or older.

The new Jeep Gladiator will be available in a diesel as well. So you can only assume the JL will get this option too.

The Cummins 4 banger that was in @85k5witha6.2 was a 4bt paint shaker.

The r2.8 is not the same animal at all. It's probably up to the task in a full size with the right trans and gearing. The land Rover used on the ultimate adventure this last year had one and from the trans back the drivetrain spec sheet read more like a full-size anyway. One tons, doubler, 37-40 inch tires.

Surprisingly enough I get almost half out of a used 4bt as a brand new crate R2.8 is.

I still like the ISB common rail 16 valve 4 cylinders that I get out of the newer bread vans, way more power than the other 2 and always backed with an allison 1000. And cheaper than the 4bt and R2.8

But the R2.8 is way way lighter I believe.

Honesty for something like a squarebody I think these little ISB motors would be awesome. A lot more power than a stock 12 valve that everyone seems to want to swap in. Just a tune away from 300hp 550ft-lbs

What is the going rate for one of those?

I am a sucker for weird engine swaps...

50 state legal. Around 9k

A big selling point though is that they come with everything needed to do the swap. I think you just have to figure out mounts, adapting to your transmission and running exhaust.

I was researching them to possibly swap into my LJ one day.

It just has no get up and go. Feels like a diesel version of my 4.0. zj. Granted, I have just driven it around the neighborhood. I’m sure it would pull hills better than the 4.0. And the mileage is definitely way way better. BUT, he’s got over 20g’s wrapped up in the damn thing. That’s the total hell no part of it.
