Cummins Sub Build/updated 12-9

Yes so far. it differs from the NV5600 in that the G56 is an all aluminum case and has integral bellhousing. other than that they're both just close ratio 6 speed gearboxes. they were each designed to keep a diesel like the cummins in its power band. The NV4500 5 speed like I have in the Dodge, really stretches the 3-4 shift for speed like cruising around town. 3 is not quite enough and 4 is just about too much.

You'll be happy with the either 6 speed, though the G56 is newer and much lighter.

Stomis.........you can get 800 ft/lbs out of an 6B cummins almost by accident.........

The G56 trans is NOT a Getrag trans. Its a Mercedes Benz trans originally used in their European 2 ton commercial trucks. It became available in the Dodge pickups in the middle of the '05 model year.

The G56 is made by a joint venture company combined of Dana and Getrag. DC didn't want to use Getrag's name because of the bad experience with the old 5 spd Getrag they had in the Gen 1 CTDs. its a getrag designed tranny. the MB you're thinking about is probably a 5 speed thats become/ or is becoming available.

Let me get this straight. A Sub build on a Chevy-centered website is now home to an argument over Dodge and Mercedes parts, not to mention a little about Getrag and Dana? Sounds like it's gotten off track a little.:screwy:

Thats probably right, I'm not sure. I was going by what I read on TDR about it. I apologize for any mistakes and for hijacking this thread.

Off topic....Not really. Argument....I don't think so.

I was asked directly about the 2 6 speeds by the Original Poster so I'm thinking its ok. Hes useing parts that were never offered my the General Motors group, so obviously other comany names are going to come up.

It'll be OK brother, we're not tainting the GM gene pool too badly.

I heard the new 6 speed is a g56 mercedes also.

And yeah so I'm finding out that its way easy to get 800ft's out of the new 6b's

I could be wrong, I thought I had a good source, but either way I'm crawling under the next 6 speed truck I can to have a look myself.

Oh yeah...I just got the rear end in and gas tank back in after the shackle flip. By this weekend I should have the 60 in the front, and then I will start building the engine mounts. Pics by this weekend

I will for sure post pictures this evening. I'm going to try to get the front suspension done today, and if time permits I will get the engine in place and start building the mounts. But the engine has to be in by the end of this month or I will be falling behind!!

Heres some new pics from the progress today. I moved the front spring hangers for the 52" springs and bolted up the 60. I put the tires on just to get a feel for how much fender trimming I will be doing; and to see it next to my 69 bronco which is on 35's. Hopefully this week I will start installing the Cummins!!

As far as I know MB always used Getrag trannies in their vehicles, cars or trucks, and G in G56 stands for Getrag.
Getrag is also used in BMW cars, it's just a companies that makes trannies like New venture gears, or the older New process with transfer cases here, most companies use their product.
Hijack off.
:D

Well, I'm putting the motor in this weekend, so I will post up picks then. But I ended up ordering the motor mount kit from Autoworld. Look pretty good.

Also, I ended up going with a 205 transfercase. I found that a early 90's dodge had passenger drop and came behind the 5-speeds in the cummins trucks. Those transmissions have the same bolt pattern and output shaft as my nv-5600. I got a rebuilt one for $600.
