Custom rear bumper question/ideas

[ QUOTE ]
/forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Got a link so I can see one. That's sounding like the way to go.

gravdigr, sounds like you're kinda talking about the same thing as 55Willy, right? I'm not too crazy about putting it in my door, but it's a good idea.

Yeah. Frenching it into the door would be easier than into the bumper you are designing. I actually first saw this mod on the TV show Trucks. The finished result looked pretty trick. I would do it but the blazer tailgate doesn't seem to leave room inside for this mod unless you don't put the window down the whole way.

Are you going to have a spair tire on the back? if you do you can run the wire for the light threw the tire carrier that will not be used for air. then when the wheel is mounted you just have a T braket taped on one end to screw on the end of the lug this would hold the plate in place and the light. plus the tage would be up ware it is esy to see so if you have gas cans high lift jack what ever it may be it wont block your plate.

I don't have plans to add a tire carrier yet. I have rear barn doors, so it's not ideal for a carrier, but could be made to work I'm sure. I think that I'll make the bumper in a way that's easy to install a tire carrier at a later date (you know, when I inevitably get bigger tires and the spare no longer fits in the little spot in the back of the burb /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

bad idea man.
a spare tire carrier is a great thing with barn doors. you can put it on the drivers side and still open the pass side(or vice versa, i cant remember) its nice that way. but like you said, as the spares get bigger it is a pain.

Ok, my question is then you weld it shut and it's air and water tight...won't the moisture inside the bumper rust it out anyway? I simply don't see welding some caps on the end as a total solution to the moisture issue.

depending on the welder being used it would be very easy to fill it with CO2 or another shielding gas before and while you weld it. but i do see your point. thats what the paint of some type is for.

there will be a finite amount of water vapor in the air inside the sealed tube... will it cause some corrosion? sure, but it will probably be a minimal amount of meaningless surface rust. So long as it is welded up correctly, more water/air cant get in... and therefore I dont see how more and more rust could just keep forming.

besides, if sealed tube is going to rust out from the inside eventually... every guy who ownz a tube buggy is fawked...

Ok guys now really, is rusting out that big of a problem? Aren't we talking about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick metal? I know sheetmetal takes years to rust out, but thick metal like this? Is it reasonable to think it could rust out during the life of the vehicle?

possibly, but not from the inside like we are talking about. I bet if you lived at the coast, drove on the beach a lil and didnt paint a bumper, you could rust it out in no time. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Under normal/sane conditions and use? 1/4"? prolly not...

Another random thought, why do you need a lighted liscense plate when the cops are gonna shine that bright ass spot light on ya anyways?? And if they are driving behind you, their headlights would light it up... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif Must be one of those things to pull you over for and hope your drunk and uninsured /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The cops must have sat down and had a meeting to decide on ways to pull you over when your minding your own damn business in the hope of nailing you for some other offense.

afaik, to be legal, you must have a light on ur rear license plate. I dont on my rig, but I hardly ever drive at night so I aint been busted yet. lol!

j

That's probably the #1 BS reason they use to pull you over if they think you're doing something stupid.

Thanks for all the help/ideas, guys. I'll for sure post up pictures when I'm done (but don't hold your breath, that's next summer's project...f/r bumpers and sliders). /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
