The knuckle mounting holes are tapered.

ahh yes.
You can if you move your axle forward and have the tie rod in the back of the axle, and have your box turn the opposite way, I know that can be done because a friend sent out his box to be rebuilts and came back turning the opposite way.
That way you will have all the weak parts hiding behind the axle
