1991 Chev Suburban 5.7L: Needed new oxygen sensor. Heated the bung with mapp gas, put an extension pipe over my breaker bar for added leverage and put my weight into it. The sensor did not loosen but I twisted the entire bung partially off the Y-Pipe. In envisioning the worst case scenarios I wondered if the Y-pipe needed to be replaced and tried to find one. The only y-pipe I could determine is compatible with the truck is a Walker 40317. However I can not find one anywhere. I find it hard to believe that compatible y-pipes are not readily available. Hoping those here can help. My question is two-fold: Is there a simple fix for the y-pipe damage and are y-pipes still available for this truck. Thank you in advance.

They sell O2 bungs, usually locally. Thread a spark plug into the new bung with lots of anti sneeze on the thread

Carefully weld it up so as to close all the gaps.

Once it cools, back the plug out and add the new sensor

Just make sure to match up the threads the the new o2 and everything else

You can Google it, but I want to say the thread size is M18x1.5. They make jam nuts that are far cheaper than what is sold as O2 bungs. If cost is a concern of course.

Surprised you can't get the walker piece, they seem pretty good about havig it all. Off to check rockauto...lol

Edit: yep, checked summit, rockauto, and random Google search. Found some questionable vendors seeming to sell it, but none of the big names. Saw a lot saying out of stock. Could email walker if you can wait, they've responded to me before.

Not sure if it matters but since we’re talking about welding a new one on… Many of the bungs sold are stainless but mild steel are available, read the description before buying if it makes a difference (I don’t know).

Thanks you all very much for the input. Money is an issue but not to an extreme. I bought two; a simple one that's just a nut and another step-fit bung with screw plug. Both are mild steel and together cost $13.50. I am not a welder but it looks like a welder could get the gun in to weld. (fingers crossed) I may get the FiTech one just in case. It won't hurt to have one laying around. The old one is still on the truck. I will use my sawsall with metal blade to get the old one out. I just put a cat-back exhaust on it. So I'm not in a hurry to switch y-pipes but will check out the 40357. Will update when finished. Thanks again.
