Im getting ready to rebuild one side of my king pins( the otherside is real tight) i have a 7/8 allen socket thats 3/4 drive...will that work..maybe with a lil heat..?..... i bought a yukon rebuild kit, wheelbearings, rotors, pads, seals, and axle joints...also last week i got a shakerbuilt steering arm, studs, nuts , sky draglink, rodends, pitman...a 1977 2wd hydroboost, steering box and pump.. i think pretty much covered... hopefully a good saturday job...

do you have the correct lines for that steering box? Around '81 GM started using lines with o-rings, before then it was flared tubes. Sounds like you have all the right stuff. A 6 foot long pipe to go on that allen helps a lot, so does having a friend around to help.

yea i got all the lines, box, pump all from the same 2wd truck...i looked around to see if the box threads were the same and found out that they wernt and i got it all one shot...brackets lines the whole nine yards even the pulleys and belts just incase... i have a new snap-on braker bar..3ft..and a large pipe if the impact doesnt work..

i think i said this in another thread, but to get my friends kingpins off and soon mine. we put the axle on jack stands, pointed the pinion straight up or down (cant remember), and put the 7/8 allen key in the kingpin with a 5ft long pipe around it. then put a come along to the other side of the axle(near the knuckle). so the bottom of the "triangle" was the axle... one side was the pipe and the other side the come along. then we just cranked the come along til it went POP! and scared the $hit out of it each time. but it was pretty easy to do.

my axle will stay in the truck tho.. hopefully it goes easy and doesnt get like some...

I replaced a set with just the bare axle sitting on the garage floor. No heat, just the allen and a 4-5' long pipe for leaverage. Came off super easy, I couldn't believe it. Once side was easy, the other side needed a little weight on the axle to keep from moving all over. But being in the truck, shouldn't have any problems.

I used the come along method Shaun mentioned - it worked great. I bet you could still do it with the axle under the truck (breaker/cheater could go horizontal)

king pins all done...came right out with a little heat and a 3/4 impact....got that all taken care of , the crossover arm on and quit for the day....going o put the 2wd box on, hook up the lines, bleed it, and put my new draglink on...then its all done.........
