Dana 60 knuckle swap

I added my opinion...that I don't think it will go anywhere. Discussion is discussion, who cares if it's old? It's still an interesting concept.

Bagged only has a couple posts, and I would hope he didn't get run off, he has a pretty cool rig.

Easy there yield, no need to scare off a new poster.

Moving it behind the axle does protect it, but the bend(s) is/are not ideal. Is it possible in your set-up to make one that is straight by moving it on the steering arms? Still on leaf springs, right?

Where'd he go?

He's not running that set up any more, he changed the knuckles and is running a double ended ram.

Its really a shame that he or you didnt make it into ttc this year

We appreciate it, I would say there's always next year but I don't think were going to try again. I REALLY REALLY HATE deep water and would rather not rebuild my entire rig when I get back. If the water wasn't so bad I'd try to make it till I died.

Been there, done that!!

Don't know what to tell you. In our group we have broke 4 stock 60 shafts, 3 cromo 60 shafts, 4 u-joints, 3 r&p's, 1 spindle (Bent it). No knuckle breakage, we all have heavy rigs too. I think you might have had a bad casting, never seen one fail in person, nothing rockwells can't fix:haha:

how do you explain this then. Ford knuckles are known for being the weakest of all 60 knuckles. These pics are of a Dodge knuckle. I was there for the one FOR MUD posted and this one. high steer and hydro assist puts a ton of stress on the top of the knuckle. you should be checking for cracks after every ride. its not bad castings, its using the part in a way it was not designed for.

That really dosn't explain anything other than you guys have broke a couple 60 knuckles.

Thats like me sayin we broke 3 r&p's so you might need to upgrade. (Which is why I'm now runnin rocks)

We are very rough on our trucks and havn't had a failure, my 60 (SOLD) blew a u joint and nearly knocked the lower bearing plate off the knuckle and still ran strong, Thomas (white crew cab) did the same thing and still no problems. Ryan (hacked up black burb) really enjoys destroying his truck and hasn't seen a failure yet.

So weather you call us lucky or whatever, it has never been an issue with us and don't plan on changin it till a failure happens.

It dosn't really matter to me because I no longer run 1 tons.

I'm thinking about running SRW wheels on DRW hubs to space them out. Think my knuckles will hold up? 46" Michelins on a hacked-to-nothing K5.

I woudn't worry about it bro, If it bothers you that much upgrade. With heavy ass Michelins, the 60 IS gunna take a poop. Weather it is a shaft, knuckle, R&P, ect... a failure is bound to happen. If you take it easy it will survive but thats no fun:haha:

Nothing is unbreakable, our group "plays it by ear", if it breaks upgrade. If something seems scetchy on your truck upgrade, but don't let anyone tell you something is junk because they broke it.

I agree with m-1028. run it. when it breaks upgrade. if the upgrade breaks, upgrade. saying that knuckles can break doesn't mean that you have to replace them. its the high steer, hydro assist and playing in the rocks that break them, not tire size. I run 44's in the rocks but I have the tie rod in the stock location.

Cool guys, thanks for your input. I'm not messing with anything 'til I break something. Gonna try to stick to crawling the dirt notches. Michelins are about 240 lbs mounted on alum rims, and the DRW hubs are gonna increase leverage on the knuckles, similarly to the hi steer, etc. Hopefully it holds up. That's why the K5 is a piece right now. For now it's a testbed for the 46"s, if they murder the rest too much, I'll either go to Rocks or back down to 38"s.
