My dash is cracked all to hell and back. I want the factory dash look, so I want to stick with the original looking pad/cover. I've seen folks advertise something called a dash cap. Have any of you guys bought and used one? If so, how did they hold up? Would you recommend a different route? I'm hoping to hear some honest opinions from you guys.

The previous owner put one in mine. It's alot better than the monster it's hiding. But the dumba$$ put some wood screws right in the very top of it to hold it to the old dash :dunno:

So it's warped all funky like....

Any pictures of your own dash cap install would be appreciated...

I've used two, one was installed in my 87 when I bought it and I put one in my 83. Both of them look ok and you really couldn't tell they were caps unless you knew it. On the other hand both of them ended up cracking where the gauge cluster goes downward towards the passenger side of the dash.

On my 91 I just went with the $300 replacement dash.

I have one on my 90 K5! It looks OK but I think the best option is the OEM pad replacement ! The caps definitely look better than a cracked dash but they are not perfect!

My '87 came with a cap that was "glued" on (probably 5 min before I picked it up!) with just a couple of squirts of some kind of caulk. Luckily it popped off the 1st time the temp went below about 50 degrees. I'm thinking about "reshaping" the dash with some minimally expanding spray foam insulation before putting the cap back on so I have a "foam sandwich" that provides more uniform support for the cap & hopefully makes it last longer. Assuming the foam don't dissolve the cap....

I did one and it held up pretty well for like 6 years. Now the center of it is cracking where it steps down from the gauge cluster area. It always seemed just a little too wide, so it would sometimes bulge a little bit in the center. Supposedly they have a lifetime warranty - if only I knew how to collect. They look way better than a cracked dash, but a Chevy purist will recognize that the speaker hole patterns are not OEM.

I've got one of the carpeted pads over my dash, I like it.

I'd be willing to bet that my dash is worse than any of yours, probably no more than 2 square inches of clean, not cracked, blue plastic.

Then on top of that somebody put a black plastic cap over that, and it was in just as bad of shape. So I got as much of that one off as I could, and Velcro-ed the blue carpet piece on.

Personally I think it's great.

Somebody here repaired a stock dash pad by fiberglassing the whole thing, then covering with a textured coating, then painting to match. If you want speakers in your dash, I assume you just cut holes in the dash and mount grills on top, then. That approach might even get up up to a larger size speaker.
