Decisions decisions - Getting closer

They are very dependable , I have a programmer 4" exhaust and a CAI on mine get 23mpg will roast my 285's at a 30 mph roll and never been in the shop 150k! These trucks can make insane power with bolt on's. I have had several diesels over the years for tow rigs but really love the Dmax. My second choice would be a Cummins those are great motors but hate the Dodge that comes with them:haha:

My BIL has a good friend that lives near him in Cincinnati that owns a duramax-centered tuning business. I may have to see what he can get me. I know he sometimes buys/sells trucks that are good candidates.

One question I have is, can you get a d-max with a manual trans anymore? I really don't care for automatics. I know it's at least an option in the Ford/Dodge trucks.

Alright you picky b****. I have been keeping my eye open there is some super nice stuff out there. An old square with a Cummins in it that is super nice can he had for less than 20 k I have seen em. If they are even semi local I can go look for ya. I know enough to recognize quality work and trust me I can pick something apart with the best of em

Get what ya want. If ya got the cash get what ya want

I feel like a new(er) truck is going to run more than a freshened up older one anyways... I was just taking a look on autotrader and people are asking ~35k for 07's with 150k miles on them:eek1: I just want to make sure if I go with an square body that it doesn't turn into another project. Sure, I can change some stuff down the road if I feel like it, but I don't want something half-finished.

I figured I'd start thinking about it/looking now so that something can get lined up by the time we move. I was figuring I could see what you might be able to find too. I know we talked a bit about this on our road trip from Deaners a couple summers ago:D

You have not been able to get a GM light duty truck with a manual transmission since 2007.

I don't believe Ford offers a manual transmission anymore either, but I could be wrong.

Dodge must figure beings they are the only one offering a real diesel engine, they may as well be the only one offering a real transmission.....

This is the truth. Only Dodge has the manual. If you could find someone that did a quality job with placing an old body on a new frame, that would be my choice. That way you have ALL the strength of these new trucks but the solid body and looks of our beloved old stuff.

That'd be my ultimate choice. It'd be awesome!

common rail cummins and be done with it , good clutch/tuner/exhaust and you will have a rocket ship that gets a solid 20+ mpg with all the creature comforts.

My 2005 and my 2012 dodges have been awesome trucks.

If you do by a duratrash stay away from the LB7 trucks and hold out for a manual don't buy into the Allison hype

you got Russells phone #?
newer Dmax in older body...he's your guy!

I really don't like a lot of the things about the new GM's, mostly the IFS (even for something not getting wheeled), and the lack of a manual trans.

I'm also not convinced I want to pick up a used truck that far out of warranty. It's not that I don't know how to fix things, I just want completely reliable/comfortable for a while with nothing broken or worn out, interior and exterior. All the older Dodge's from up in Ohio (where I've been looking just because family/friends could go look at or possibly help with purchase) are trashed it seems, or people think they're worth what a new one is.

I'm very tempted by this option: http://www.ramtrucks.com/hostc/bmo/CUT201515D28L91A/2TA/summary.do

Anybody have a hookup with Chrysler for pricing, or know what the cash price on something like this would end up at?

As much as I'm not crazy about spending that kind of money on something right now, I plan on keeping whichever truck I go with for a VERY long time, so it might just be worth it.

The more I think about an older truck with new drivetrain, the more I think I won't find something done-enough, or worth buying by the time I need one. Obviously it's a few months out until I need to pull the trigger on something, but I don't want to not have something at least mostly lined up by the time we move and are also going to be looking at houses, and everything else logistically.

I paid 36,000 for my brand new 2012 3500 ST , which is a "base" model truck but it had all the mechanicals I wanted . My buddy bought a nearly identical truck except a 2013 model with the aisin transmission 1 year later for 38,000 . Both of our trucks have cruise ,tilt, power windows and locks , keyless entry ( mine has auto start) satelite radio, ect . It's a very nice truck and does not feel base model at all ( the 2013 has a backup camera )

I looked for a solid year trying to find a good used cummins but the prices where just so high I decided on a new one . I looked at GM and ford offerings but the prices on those trucks were much higher for less especially with an inferior engine.

As for the new engine in the old truck , you have to do it out of love for the old truck money wise it's a wash . To do it right the conversion is going to cost a minimum 10,000 plus the clean square body crew cab and then your still left with a rougher riding , noisy , drafty truck , that won't handle as much weight as the truck the engine came from. In my option to do it right you need to blow the truck completely apart box ,the frame , lizard skin and dynamat the hell out of the cab and doors , find a ford 60 front end ( or convert over to coil sprung front using a AAM axles from the donor rig ) swap out the rear end, beef up the rear suspension , and then figure out how to make the cruise control, gauges, A/C all work like they should with the factory appearing GM gauge cluster . It's alit off work to do it right it can be done but it takes lots of time and money.

So I just realized the link I have up above doesn't actually link to what I put together, just the beginning of the build it page...

Anyways, I selected the tradesman level, but with enough extras (plus the drivetrain I want) to make it great(including bright green pain). Sure, I'd probably put aftermarket wheels/tires on it later but I can't imagine wanting to change much for a long time. It came out at $50,xxx estimated, but I wasn't sure if that was the financed through a dealer price or not. If I go this route it'll be a cash deal, so I'm curious how much I could knock off? Also, how long does a special order truck usually take for delivery?

Obviously this is all speculation at this point, I'm just trying to think about it.

When I bought my new 2014 Dodge I could have had pick of a dozen or so '14 Cummins in the line for $38,000. They were knocking off $12K. This was in July. I just wanted a commuter so the V6 4x4 quad cab works for me. Got it for $28,000 OTD so they knocked $10K off sticker. At least this gives you some reference points.

I built my truck online and did a dealer search , I was gonna order a 6-speed manual truck but found mine and it stickers for 49,0000 they dropped to 36,000 I offered 38,000 they accepted it with out hesitation and then I applied my ConocoPhillips dis out which took another 2400.00 of , add price of tags and the auto start and I was back at 36,000 out the door.

If you special order a truck you are pretty much stuck paying the MSRP unless you can work with your dealer
