Dex-cool good - bad - ugly?

I wont ever use it again. I put it in my new motor and now have a leaky intake gasket. It is sitting at the dealership now waiting on a system flush and they are going to to a leakdown test tomorrow to make sure it is just the intake gasket. I sure hope so. I hate to let other people work on it but I dont have the time and I am pretty frustrated with it.

I would rather put the new gaskets in myself and save the 600 they want but it is pretty bad timing and I dont feel like messing with it.

Thanks for the link, opfor. I didn't know Bobistheoilguy has a forum. Unfortunately, all I learned is that about half of the people hate the stuff because of some supposed gelling, whether they've experienced it themselves or not. At the same time, the other half claim they've run it in multiple vehicles with no problems.

Oddly, when some of the most vocal opponents were pushed for proof of the evils of Dexcool, they were unable to provide any, other than links to other vehicle forums spewing simliar "it happened to my mechanic's buddy" stories. It really feels like a case of mass hysteria to me.

I'm gonna sit on the fence on this one for a while. I know PLENTY of people with Dexcool in their systems, and have yet to hear of ONE failure- that's the reason I"m playing Devil's advocate in this thread.

Is there a chance that maybe you just installed the intake gasket imperoperly to begin with? :dunno:

Possible, but unlikely. I dont know for sure that the Dexcool could be any part of the problem but old green will do just fine.

See, that's why I asked the question. You previously stated :

However, you now admit that you have absolutely no evidence proving that Dexcool had anything to do with the failure. Your statement above makes it sound like Dexcool is to blame, and is VERY misleading. And these kind of off the cuff comments are what feed the "mass hysteria" I referred to earlier.

It's nothing personal, brother. I'm just trying to prove a point. :thumb:

moms blazer had it for 6 years no probs, my trailblazer has it, is 2 years old, no problems, buddys 99 silverado has it, no problems. ive never seen gelling in any vehicle with ONLY dexcool... i have however seen deposits and gelling from dex mixed with green...

My 6.5 had 105,000 miles on dex-cool before I got around to changing it. I think the problems come from people taking their cars to quick lube places that top off their coolant with the wrong stuff. When I flushed my coolant this time, I put the green stuff in that you can mix with any coolant.

All I know is it was installed IAW Edelbrock's procedures. Torqued to 15ft-lbs an sequence. Had not had any problems until now. Just to be safe I will go back to green. Havent ever had any probs with it and will stick with it to be safe. When it gets repaired I will be sure to keep the gaskets and thoroughly inspect them.
