I was thinking of using unimog axles on my blazer but….the limit of the top speed is an issue. So I was thinking modified ford 9 inch or some other combo that is small but tough. Yes I want 44 inch boggers .

That's a very open ended question. The stock 9" center section can be pretty weak but the ring and pinion setup is really strong. Basically, if you want to run a 9" with 44's, you will be spending tons of money on an aftermarket center section, aftermarket shafts (35, 40 spline?) and I wouldn't recommend using the stock housing either unless you are going to truss the hell out of it. Don't get me wrong, that 9" would be pretty much the sweetest thing going (with lots of clearance too) but its one of the most expensive options.

Most would point you to a FF 14 bolt or a 70.

Found a locked 70 for 200.00 lol

out of a 79 ford.

what front end will work with it?

I give up im building a Tank.

Damn now I need to get a big block.

Oh and alot more money would help lol.

Any front end that is the same gear ratio, again very open question. If what you are actually wanting to know is what is comparable strength wise? It would be a dana 60.

What kinda top speed you looking for here? I see you said mogs wouldn't work. With 44's & overdrive I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

I’ve heard the axles can’t handle highway speeds, is that correct?""Unimog axles were designed from factory to handle 39 to 41 inch tall tires. With those tires, the factory maximum sustained speed rating is 90kph (55mph). With 44 inch tall tires, that rating will convert to 100kph (62mph). There is a safety factor, and through our testing we haven’t come up with what we consider a true maximum speed rating so we continue to state the factory original speed rating. Disk brakes do help, though, since they allow more air to pass around the portal than drums, to help keep the portal cool."

Here is a few links. other than ford 9 inch these were the best option.

Sorry I tend to be vague sometimes. I figured it would be a 60 as the strongest option. Its just so expensive for Dana 60's due to there popularity.

I really want the mog units but for the money they will cost I do not want to deal with the issue of freeway speeds. Unfortunately I do alot of driving and this truck will see alot of on road driving. I want to Max out at 44 inch tires.

Well since the dana 70 was also Found in the 1 ton Chevy I figured I would buy it. So I have a 1979 ford dana 70 with a power lock. Not a "real" locker.
I am not sure if it is a regular 70 or the u type but I really don’t care too much as a dana 60 is overkill so I figure the weakest dana 70 is about as strong as a good dana 60.

I am going to rebuild it for abuse but wanted to know where was the best resource for parts and information. I figure a Detroit locker, molly axels, and so forth. The gears are 4.10.. So now I need a dana 60 to go with it. What are they worth? What type do I need to optimize fitting my 75 blazer? or if there is a dana 60 thread that is particularly good could you forward me to it.

Thanks.

The D70 U is the one that has a smooth bottom, if yours has ribs or anything then it's not the U, That is the only good thing about the U otherwise it's just another D70

Where do I identify BOM numbers?

Date 5 11 7 C6 Bom 603718-8

the tag on the diff cover bolts says 603718-8 L S

I am pretty sure its a d70 u but the casting only says d 70.

The former owner said it came off a 1979 ford " utility" vehicle.

I went to Dana and it came up with no answer.

Help.

anyone?? or where?

As I stated above, the U has a smooth bottom, no ribs.
That's why people like it, no need for shaving it to get a sliding diff, and has better clearance.

I can't tell you where to look, I haven't tried to search for info from a BOM yet.
I do know that th D70 U came in fords of that era, so you are already on the right track.
The LS at the end of BOM means you should have a Limited slip in there.
As for confirming it's a U, as I said visual is the easiest.
Is it a smooth bottom? if so it's a U, if not then it's not. No need for a BOM to know that. :D

Well it is a u then.

The bottom looks smooth.

I will post a pic asap.

Thanks for your patience imiceman44
