do/can ujoints make a clicking sound when not greased properly?thanks
Yes and it happened to me last week, that was too late for me, it was the sound of the caps breaking the ridge that holds the c clip, and they are out. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Yes, they will click. But by the time they are making a sound like that it's too late to simply grease them. A click out of u-joint is "u-joint-ese" for "replace me before I explode and drop your driveshaft!!!"
The best way I can describe the sound is to say it sounds like marbles dropping onto glass- kind of a ticking/clicking deal. Once you've heard it, you'll never forget it..... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My front shaft sounds like that, been doing it for a year now... (crossing fingers!) I just hope it holds out until I get a doubler installed so I can get measurements and do it right!
Everytime one of my u-joints has got to the clicking stage, it'seither been in bad shape or on the verge of failing. Is there a chance that the clicking is coming from somewhere else up front? I know that a cracked flywheel can sound similar......
A cracked exhaust manifold will make a distinct clicking sound when accelerating too.
My u-joints use to just absolutely EXPLODE! POW! KABOOM!(kinda like a scene outof batman)
I my early days of shimming and angles, the top joint and yoke would be hot.
Might as well change it for a better piece of mind. Only 10-16 bucks...course on my rigs, clicking could've been any thing /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Cracked flyweel, cracked flexplate (or bolts), U-jointss... they can all make clicking noises - Exhaust leaks usually sound more like a lifter.
yea, that happened to me when mine went bad, it didnt explodhowever
one cap cracked in 1/2, lost the clip, and all of the bearing inside, when i took it off, it made me wonder how it was possible that the ujoint stayed on! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif
Is it possible for a u-joint to "click" even if all 4 caps are seated properly and all 4 c-clips are in place? (busted needle bearings possible???)
Yes, if there is little grease inside and it is about ready to go............had that happen first lifted truck, for two days couldn't figure out what that clicking sound was until the u-joint let go, SLAMMING the driveshaft up into the tranny tunner............. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Thanks, time for another $25 conversion joint /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif
